Why Joanne might fail to connect with the public

To the fans that have followed Gaga relentlessly since her debut, watched all of her interviews, learned everything about her rise to stardom, we can understand the history behind these songs. Diamond Heart about her wild go-go dancer days on the Lower East Side, pining for stardom. John Wayne about her tendency to be attracted to bad boys like Luc Carl. Joanne about her soul-searching and freedom of being a young artist at 19, also how she's  felt the spirit of her aunt inside of her and how her death affected her family. We can easily understand these songs and get into them because we know Gaga. To the average listener though, they will be confused and uninterested.

There are very relatable songs like Million Reasons, Angel Down, and Hey Girl, but the rest of the album feels like her autobiography and I don't think listeners will get it or understand why it's important. 80% of people who find the album on Spotify or whatever medium aren't gonna have a clue who Joanne is and aren't gonna look up interviews to find out.

I hope she pushes the songs like Hey Girl and Angel Down or even Come to Mama because they don't suffer from being exclusive to Gaga and people who know her story. She achieved an accessible, relatable autobiographical narrative on You and I, Speechless, and The Edge of Glory and even Perfect Illusion but not really with most other songs on Joanne. Not that this is bad because I love hearing about Gaga's life and her perspective, just saying that others won't really get it.

For a record that tried to make her relatable, I think she got kinda lost. It's 100% more relatable than ARTPOP, though, in every aspect so that's an accomplishment.

Uhhhhhh, people refused to connect to ARTPOP, it was SO relatable... "put some lipstick on, perfume your neck and slip your high-heels on" .... .. .how many girls and guys do that?!?!?!??!

not to mention "I killed my former and left her in the trunk on highway 10" :emma:

no but really, ARTPOP was relatable, people just refused to connect.

The melody that you choose can rescue you ♥

Relax monsters. The worst is behind us. ARTPOP already flopped. An artist only ever flops once and only once in their career. After the flop they're either forgotten or they're stronger. Now let's forget about chart/streaming/reviews worries and just enjoy the music.

True. She doesn't really help people understand every little detail within the album itself, but I do think there are enough tracks that are relatable to the extent that you don't need to know every detail to feel connected to it. Like, "Joanne" is a powerful song, but you don't need to know every bit about Joe's relationship with his sister to feel it, you know? And I don't think you need to know about Carl specifically to understand "John Wayne," but knowing about him does give a bit more weight to the song for sure.

You people need to start caring about what you feel and not what other people may think.

And why do songs need to be relatable?? I can't relate to 90% of pop music but I listen to it bc it SOUNDS GOOD.

I agree. I think Gaga thinks the music can speak for itself. It does - and its an absolutely incredible album - but the dialogue that comes with Gaga has always been important to what she does and unfortunately she's not interested in that this time. Unless its via radio.

What about ARTPOP wasn't relatable? The lyrics? Go read some Duran Duran lyrics, and talk to me about relatable. Lyrically, this is by far her most relatable album, unless you think the general public personally identifies with a government hooker and a bloody mary. Seriously. Exactly how many people do you need to enjoy the album in order for you to accept the fact that you might just simply like it? 80%? 80% of the adult listening public?
