"Croatoan"

Is anyone else really confused about the word Croatoan in Roanoke?

First, in Murder House, Billie Dean says it can make ghosts go away but then Violet tries it with no success.

Then, in Roanoke, they found the word carved on the tree in the old colony site and it apparently was a spell to make the spirits go away.

BUT, we know that the Roanoke people were not expelled from their original place, they just moved because Butcher told so. It had absolutely nothing to do with a spell.

And then the Leslie Jordan's character who I can't remember the name now used the word to scare ghosts and he is sort of successful.

Then, Shelby tries the spell, but it doesn't work.

???

Why the **** it was carved on the tree + why do some people say it's a strong spell + why does this spell work only in convenient times?

It didn't work with Violet because she was dead. It worked with Elias because he was alive. It didn't work with Shelby because it was the bloody harvest or whatever and it doesn't work then.

Part of this is legitimate American history; the Roanoke colony did, in fact, disappear. No bones were found, nothing. All that was left was "Croatoan" carved into a few trees. It doesn't just exist in the AHS universe.

It does, when Leslie Jordan (or was it Elias) was explaining the Butcher story, he mentioned the tree and we even got to see a small girl carving it

It doesn't /just/ exist in AHS. It exists on the show and in reality too

I guess it's just a way of somehow tying in the reality to whatever version they came up with this time, lol

Spells can work differently. Like, if used by separate people it may become a completely different incantation because the person didn't either: a) remember the spell correctly, or have it written correctly, or b)They used it differently.

like using it in  place by carving it into a tree may be a permanent warding, while a person just using it may be temporary until they can find a more permanent banishment or exorcism.

Ryan may also used the rather plausible excuse that the damn tree couldn't really handle magic. Like it couldn't cycle music through its veins.
