Not sure if trolling... But in case you weren't aware, Christianity is split into different groups like catholics, protestants, orthodox... Being catholic IS being Christian.

All the different Christian denominations worship differently, and follow different aspects of the bible. Many different branches of Christianity have their own forms of bibles.

Catholics are Christians basically.

I'm going to bring this one step further. 

Christian is the broadest word. It means: 

Believer in Jesus (Christ) as the son of God. Was born of a virgin, died for humanity's sins, rose again 3 days later. Belief and love of Jesus is what will provide the path to heaven. 

Any group that believes those things ^ is "Christian" in the broadest sense. If they don't believe in those things, not Christian. Examples: Jews do not belief that Jesus was the son of God. They're still waiting for that true son to come along. Muslims do not believe Jesus was the son of God, to them he was just a real bad-ass prophet. Mohammad is their dude instead of Jesus.  The MAIN God is the same for all three however. Just not the Jesus part. 

Many time you have leadership/cultural structures around those believes that expand on them. The largest and most powerful is the Catholic Church. They are a governing/cultural structure that gives boundaries to those beliefs by adding many very specific practices/ a specific culture to the way that they express and practice their Christianity. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. All Catholic churches exist in a structure that eventually leads back to him. If you are not Catholic, you may just think the Pope is a wise leader, but you don't view him as YOUR leader.

Early Christians split to Catholics and Orthodoxes, Catholics put a lot importance on Pope, Mary, statues and saints, Orthodox Christians are more about saints and icons. Both denominations believe in trinity. Both have different Bibles, both believe they are the first, original Christians.

Some 500 years ago Catholics had a "reform" and from them Protestants were born, with no Pope, no icons and saints and a different Bible (less books). 

There are also smaller subgroups and branches. 

That's about it.

I think we need to have a crash course on religion thread to explain stuff like this; I thought this was common knowledge that Catholicism is Christianity but apparently I was being too optimistic

I'd like to add that in the US there is a thing dubbed: CULTURAL CHRISTIAN. 

It's not official, and a lot of people won't really admit to it, but it basically means this: 

I live in a society that largely is christian. I am going to do easter and christmas and say things like "i'm praying for you", I may go to church on occasion or seek the advice of my pastor/priest, but at the end of the day-- I really don't take it THAT deep and am mostly just doing this thing because its what my culture is. If I was born in another place with another culture, i'd do the same with THAT religion too. 

I'm not going to speculate, on Gaga specifically because thats totally not fair to do to someone. But the point is, if you don't mind people celebrating Christmas or Easter, you really can't get on them for talking about prayer in sadness and desperation.

This happens every time and every time I wonder if people really don't know that Catholics are Christian of if they are just making silly threads and comments. Then again, we have people here who don't know who The Beatles are or have never heard of Berlin, so.....makes me wonder.

Let's add onto the idea that there is "non-denominational Christians" who believe, but kind of do it separately from branches or have like too much of  mix of all of the branches to find themselves comfy sitting in one specific place.
