It wasn't all a gimmick, I will admit in the end it became gimmicky! But for a while she was just invoking people like Grace Jones, Michael, Madonna, Bowie, Elton, etc. the first few years... Egypt. Dressing "normal" could also fit the criteria of gimmick. Just because something is over-the-top doesn't make it a gimmick.
