First female president elected in Estonia

The former state official of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, was on Monday elected president of the country in the parliament, Riigikogu. The sole candidate, 81 MPs out of 101 cast their votes in her support. Kaljulaid will serve as the first female president of Estonia.

Politically, Kaljulaid has defined herself as a liberal conservative – she has spoken in favour of conservative economic policies, but at the same time has liberal views on many social matters, such as LGBT rights and immigration. “I want to listen to the people who live in different corners [of Estonia], and are disappointed in political parties and political and public affairs in general,” Kaljulaid said in a public letter last week.

An EU Court of Auditors member since 2004, Kaljulaid has an MBA from Tartu University in Estonia and has served as an economic-policy adviser to the prime minister. She’ll serve a five year-term after Ilves completed the two allowed by the constitution.

Kaljulaid opposes a more federal Europe and she said last week that she’ll urge the EU to focus on ensuring the freedom of movement for capital, goods, services and people. In an interview with public broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhaaling, she said Russia poses the biggest security risk to Estonia and also called for more cooperation between countries on the Baltic Sea and in the Nordic region.

she's not that bad  she seems to be doing her best, idk. no one could miraculously fix the economy that easily tbh

nope Lithuania had one for quite a long time. now that i think about it, Ukraine too, didn't it?

But now that we've changed to euros, everything is MORE expensive than it was in LTs! (Lithuanian Currency) Just for a example: A restaurant meal for 4 used to cost 50-60LTs.  Now it costs 70 EUROS.

the prices did jump but i feel like you are a bit exaggerating, first of all Lithuania didn't have a choice it was mandatory to join euro zone, secondly i'm pretty sure the prices had to be adjusted in both Latvia and Estonia when they joined euro zone too.

This happened in Spain in 2001 when we changed to Euros, but at least the Euro is a very stable currency and salaries will adapt too, it's just a progress and being in the EU is always for the best imo... Like I was looking for Russian concert tickets last night and the cheapest were 1500 ru, that's 14€. It's a lot for Russians but nothing for Euro, yes I know they have to adapt them to the salaries but anyway that's pretty cheap

Oh and for being an east european country, that a woman is elected feels super progessive, doesnt it? They're more far from the old russia and closer to Europe, next stop is gay rights!

But we need a law everywhere that really condemns hate crimes and homophobia! I know Estonia is advanced on that but it needs to be done everywhere, idk what is Europe waiting for

Come on, your salaries will adapt soon, as they did in Estonia, our average monthly wage is ~1000 EUR, and 430 minimum (will be higher in December - 460). It was average 500 EUR and 150 minimum 5 years ago, when we changed to euros.
