I don't think Gaga is uncomfortable. Gaga has always used her identity to embody her messages. With each new song, she transforms and performs her point across. There is nobody behind the aura, because Gaga is the aura.

I think she's likening Joanne to herself. Joanne was a poet, a writer, an artist. But not with the fame. Lady Gaga is an artist, a poet, a writer, with fame.

She's saying her aunt is basically her without the fame. Maybe? Idk that's what I took from it 

I really like the way you interpreted it. Gaga is telling the story of somebody else who was just like her but had no fame. At the same time, though, Gaga is telling her own story.

But we should all remember that this is ephemeral, like everything, and Gaga will change again. It is naive for us to assume that Gaga will stagnate this way for the rest of her career.

Maybe I'm too rational. To me Gaga has always been Stefani. She's only Lady Gaga to me when she's in such a focussed concentrated performance mode she can't make genuine contact with the audience, like at big tv performances, but in Gaga's case Stefani almost always shines through.

So when she says call me Joanne, I don't see why because her aunt Joanne was her own person. And Gaga that never became famous just doesn't exist. And if she did, she'd be called Stefani and her life would've evolved too as opposed to Joanne who will always be stuck in time because she died so young. 

I understand what she's trying to say, I just think it's about the Joanne in her, and not that she is Joanne.

The way I understand what Gaga says with her entire body of work is that identity, as commonly defined, can and should be challenged. Like all of us, the human being that is Gaga is literally being, or in a constant state of action. No matter what we call her, Lady Gaga, Stefani, Joanne, Mother Monster, Jo Calderone, The Countess, or anything else, the being she is never confines to one label because that would mean finality.

It doesn't mean that one name is more her than another. They all make up Gaga the being. They all refer to the perpetual performer. They all teach us how to put on a show of being.
