the song wasn't a "smash" in the first place, it collected its top spots over several years. same goes for the album. it used be about pure sales and there was no iTunes so you had to take your time to go out and buy the single.

the movie didn't reach every corner of the world simultaneously either.

hell, even The Fame didn't reach #1 in many places despite being the most steadily selling album for two years in a row and that was already deep into the internet era.
