sillynate 6,170
Anyone else find it odd that lately, most lead singles are announced and released without any info on the actual album? If I remember correctly, a few years ago the artists would announce a lead single and album together. But now they just announce the lead then go some time until they announce the album. PI was released before we knew LG5 was called Joanne. Rihanna released 3 singles before announcing Anti. I think Britney did it with Make Me and Glory. Beyoncé with Formation and Lemonade. Marketing scheme? 2015-16 trend? Discuss
MAC 1,942
Yeah, I have noticed that but not sure why that is. Maybe it is some kind of marketing scheme.. who knows? Overall I do kind of miss the old days of how albums were released though.
monsterdino 31,991
Those 3 singles from Rihanna are not a part of Anti tho
paul 687
For some of those artists it's just so they could backtrack and say it wasn't associated with the album if it wasn't successful

Duella Dvil 10,496
Artists have been doing this for a long time. Hell not every single is necessarily always correlated with an album in the eighties. Often times it is a marketing scheme to draw interest, "hmm what concept could this song go with" it's not new www.instagram.com/theduella666

StrawberryBlond 14,840
So they can claim it was just a buzz single if it underperforms, while secretly re-working the album it was intended to be on. Because if the lead single is released but then axed from the final cut due to poor sales, it can derail an entire album's concept, even if all we all know about it is the title. Particularly if it's a concept album. It's best to keep the album's themes and title a complete secret until the lead is proven to be a success, so the label has the go-ahead to proceed as planned. These days, when albums are more difficult to sell than ever, its become necessary to have this get out of jail free card. It's shady, but it's a good backup. Those weren't leads though.
