GANGIE 5,420
You have to understand that most of the fanbase had waited so long not for the new music itself but for that TOP #1 SMASH on the charts... I would love to see what would happen if PI smashed the charts... TONIGHT I WON'T WEAR MY DISGUISE

And it's obvious. We see The Chainsmokers are now on the #1 because their label is making so much promo for them. They're new. And they know they can't have a strong fanbase so they have to promote the music for people to buy it and then make some money. Gaga is already established. They made EVERYTHING to build a strong fanbase, and that with her proven love for her fans, it works. Why would you invest money to promote a song that, if we talk only about iTunes sales, will only give you 60% of the benefits? Artists make so little money from the actual music, it all goes to marketers, labels, etc. If a song is 1,29$, they will only earn 0,77 cents from it. If the song sells 1 million, they'd make 770.000$. Selling a million is considered a good thing, right? They already know her fanbase will buy the product, so at least they will make some money from it. Knowing that Gaga is already famous, they don't have to invest in promotion because they already have those "clients" to buy the product. Maybe they're not MILLIONS, but it will be something at least. That was something that I never considered before, that is a very good point. Labels have to choose what they opt to spend money on very carefully. They have a big roster of artists, so they can't give them all equal promo or else they'd go broke. So, focusing on giving the majority of it to those who need the sales is their #1 perogative. That explains why one album wonders are what they are - once they've proven themselves with a successful debut, their label thinks they can ease back on promo because they've got enough fans to keep them afloat now, but the lack of promo turns out to be what kills their career. It's a sad thing. The fact that Gaga has still sold decently despite much more limited promo is a sign that she will stick around, which is great. AP selling what it did made it seem like a flop because in 2013, sales were better. But now most major popstars are flopping, some are only getting one successful single per album, only the occasional artist sells 1 million now. So, if AP was released now, it would look just fine. Entering into this new era of music where sales are on the decline will mean Joanne will be looked at in a different light. The public won't expect as much from it because they're used to albums from popstars flopping lately. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. And you're so right about the touring circuit. Most artists who had released an album like AP wouldn't be allowed to tour because it would be deemed too unpopular to risk it. But her label knew she had the fan loyalty plus the public who know how good she is live. There have been albums that sold more than AP and had more hits that didn't get a tour (Rihanna's Talk That Talk is a prime example - 5 million worldwide sales but no tour - wtf?!). Indeed, Madonna has shown that name recognition alone can keep you afloat in this business. Her last 2 albums have been undeniable flops without so much as a top 40 single, yet she continues to sell out tours, even if they're not her most successful. Madonna set herself up as a touring artist, which was a very smart move. She knew her sales were slipping and the only way to make money now was from touring. Gaga's set herself up as a touring powerhouse from day one and that alone will ensure that the money keeps rolling in for her. Even if she can't tour the entire world, even if she can only do arenas, even if she can only do one date per city. It'll still be enough to keep her in business. It could be so much worse. She could be like Christina Aguilera - she hasn't toured since her 2006 album. She's been out of the touring game for nearly a decade now. Her label clearly don't trust her to sell a tour even though her last 2 album sales were very close to Madonna's and she was allowed to tour. That's because labels are trained to know a tour seller when they see one.

You put a great deal of thought into your post and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, tbh. Perfect Illusion is a great song. I just wish Gaga would have released the music video the same night so that she could have earned more success with that song. It's an amazing song and deserves all the success in the world. I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

I'll bet you anything that if Perfect Illusion turns out to be a sleeper hit like Just Dance and it reaches the # 1 spot on the BB Hot 100, all of a sudden the song will no longer receive so much hate in this site like it's receiving now. What I've come to realize is that what this fan base is after isn't Gaga's new music. Yes, it's the music, but most importantly the stans are just after the kill. They want Gaga to break records and be the most successful artist in music history because they want to have the receipts to throw them in the face of all of Gaga's haters. In other words, they want to feel validated for stanning for Lady Gaga. Very sad, isn't it? To be honest, that's the wrong reason to stan for an artist because that means all they care about is the success of an artist and not really their music and artistry. I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

Cody Draco 2,531
There's nothing indie or even alternative about Perfect Illusion. It's a lackluster pop song wearing an (insert name of rock band) t-shirt and drinking an overpriced Starbucks drink. You would think that if Gaga was gonna do a duet with Florence Welch for the album she would want to bring her A-game as a songwriter to the other songs as well. Disappointing.
