Why I love PI

I've seen a few threads like this one; I hope it's okay.

So the first time I listened to Perfect Illusion, I, like a lot of other monsters, was a little underwhelmed. Not that I didn't like it, it was just so different and unexpected. (Although that's exactly how I felt with Applause)

I remember when I reached around 0:40, I was like, "Oh wait that's the chorus" and literally went back to listen again :toofunny:

I think the reason I didn't love it at first was because I was looking for something to relate to, which is becoming a bad habit. I listened to the lyrics and not the music. At first the lyrics are quite relatable, and then the song progresses and it becomes less and less about the lyrics, and more and more about the music. I didn't understand that change; I kept focussing on Gaga's voice and words and thinking, "C'mon Gaga, sing something more." I think that's how it is with a lot of other people, which is why we have so many listeners complaining about the repetitiveness of the last 74 seconds

The music is not repetitive to me at all throughout the song. And actually, after the key change, there are three different parts of the song left. There's also tiny musical elements here and there that bring everything together so well; every time I listen to it, I discover something new. Like those wind-chime sounds and those trumpet sounds towards the end, the low background voice at "I just want you alone", the layering of different parts in the build-up (especially the echo effect); gosh there's just so much to celebrate in this song!

I've learned to focus more on the music and background vocals in the latter half of the track, which has become my favourite part. I actually prefer it to the first part with more diverse lyrics and less diverse (?) music. I like how, when no more words can be sung except,"it was a perfect illusion", music fills in the empty spaces (so well!). I think this is going to be my favourite Gaga song, unless another track from JOANNE slays me even more (probably Hey Girl, lol). I hope you enjoy this song as much as (or even more than) I do, because it takes my breath away each time. Each time, I tell you, each time

I can't at all these people saying "I hated it at first but I listened it to 100 times now I love it." :diane: You guys do realize that you're brainwashing yourself into liking it right? It happens with like every song. Listen to Rise that much and you'll love it too. :sharon:

There's such thing as liking a song, though. If someone else starts to like it, what harm is it doing?

And it was like the second time I listened that I fell in love with it ( I mean, it's GAGA I wouldn't end at just one listen). So would you please not assume so much? Thanks.

Dangerous Man

I always like it, from the start until now. It's very raw, very personal. I feel sorry for many ppl with poor taste.

Personally PI still underwhelmes me a bit. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE this song: it is simple yet so raw and full of rage and aggressive energy it makes me want to move. The vibe thrills me everytime I listen to it.
But I have to be honest and say that I expected more from a lead by Gaga. I expected more, diverse funky-disco elements. The rockish, guitar melody in the background could be more emphasized. The beat/bass could be more intense. The songwriting could have been more complex. Of course it's easy to complain about something you haven't created but I still can form an honest opinion, right?

I feel like they were going into the right direction, developed this sick (=positive) concept, were absolutely obsessed with it, but ended up finishing the song along half the way. There's so much more potential in regards of telling a story about a "Perfect Illusion", feeling that betrayed by so many including yourself that you are carried by a state of trance, full of emotions.
Overall, it isn't a bad song like many people tend to say but it doesn't sound like a record made by one of the most talented musicians on this planet either. Still I am very happy she released PI and set a milestone for her career to show a different side of her.

Love your comment and kind honesty. I completely understand that you expected a little more, especially considering it's a lead single. I guess I personally am so in love with it currentlybthat I don't think much about its potential  But now that you mention it, it really could have been more. A little longer too; the abrupt stop caught me off-guard at first.
