Critique Your Fave

Featured Posts

I am a huge fan of all of the people I am about to mention, but I thought it would be fun if we could critique our favorite artists. This is not a time for negative comments, but rather comments about what we think our favorite artist can do in order to improve their work for now and in the future. For obvious reasons, I won't mention Lady Gaga, because not only do I have nothing original to add, but because I don't want to get dragged to the gutters :laughga:

Beyoncé

Spoiler

Not much I can say, other than I despise her album re-releases. It's a genius marketing strategy - making the consumer buy two copies of the same album, only the deluxe edition was released months later with bonus material. It is this reason that I haven't bought Lemonade yet; I'm still waiting for Lemonade (Platinum Edition):nails:

Britney Spears :awkney:

Spoiler

I think that Glory is Britney Spears's best work since Circus, but her lack of promotion is killing this record. She has proven that she is still capable of releasing a solid record with a dozen hits, but failing to promote it is unbelievable, because it has so much potential!

Also, I believe that she needs to sing in her natural register, because that baby voice has slaughtered her vocal cords. The song "Just Like Me" doesn't even sound like her because she isn't singing in her signature style. I also wish that she would return to the acoustic guitar sessions that were scraped from her unreleased album The Original Doll. Would have been my favorite album of hers, but it unfortunately got shelved. She seems to not have much control over her career anymore, as noted in her Flaunt interview: "When I attempt to gather more details about her new album from the source itself, she is equally unaware. 'It’s done, but I have no idea when anything’s coming out.' she says" :neyde:

FKA twigs

Spoiler

Where you at?? When I Google "FKA twigs" at any given moment, all I'm going to find is articles about her relationship Robert Pattinson. She hasn't released a new song since February, and she's been keeping quiet since then.

Madonna :reductive:

Spoiler

I wish Madonna would stop pitch-shifting her vocals. Her natural voice has matured and sounds sultry, so pitching her voice to sound younger ruins the overall sound of her music.

Also, she needs to return to the genres that she is good at. All of her experimentation sounds more like she's trying to appeal to a younger audience, especially with collaborators like Diplo, Nicki Minaj, and Drake. She has accumulated millions of fans in her 30+ years of fame, so she needn't worry about gaining new ones, especially if it makes her lose her old fans. She needs to return to the genres she thrived in, and genres that would still sound great with her voice. She needs to aim for more music like Bedtime Stories, Ray Of Light, and Music, and abandon the sounds like MDNA. I liked Rebel Heart, but it didn't impact the general public or I as much as the other albums mentioned. :madge:

Nicki Minaj

Spoiler

Best rapper of this generation, but girl, lay off on the collaborations. I'm listening to her album to hear Nicki, not Nicki Minaj feat. Jessie Ware, Ariana Grande, Jessie J, Beyoncé, Drake, Lil' Wayne, Chris Brown, Jeremih, Meek Mill, Lunchmoney Lewis, & Skylar Grey - and that's only one album. She only contributed to less than one minute on her song "Truffle Butter," and on "Only," she only raps for less than two minutes!

:classy: Your turn. I promise not to bash any opinions, and I want you all to do the same with each other.

Lana Del Rey

Spoiler

Make more albums like Ultraviolence & BTD/BTDP. Honeymoon was far too disappointing. Her first 2.8 releases were outstanding and really introduced a different aspect of vintage modern material, musically and visually.

Love this thread.

Waiting for your Bjork read, tho :classy:

I tried to come up with an issue I have with her, but I honestly couldn't. I miss the times when she had B-sides to her music, because nowadays, she just releases an album and doesn't release singles with B-sides. I also wish I could interview her because I have some real questions that no one has asked. :laughga: But other than that, I have no real problem with her. :poot:

I own several Bjork DVDs (most of the ones she released in the early 2000's around her Greatest Hits era)... I live for this woman.

One of my favorite moments from those interviews was when she said (paraphrasing), "I don't understand why people think I'm so odd. I sing pop music!!"

That summarizes my feelings on her 1992-2007 catalog perfectly.

But post 2007, I miss the "pop music" element to her sound. It's gone. I understand why (she's a real artist, bigger than pop music). But I still thirst for those pop melodies.

I feel guilty for saying this because Britney isn't our puppet but she's only like 34 and she should step her game up now before it's too late.

Redstreak

The Lord's version of feminism is really embarrassing. Plus her taste in men (besides Lautner and Gyllenhaal) is low key tragique

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

I totally agree, I find myself always returning to Ultraviolence, but never Honeymoon. It's a great album, but for some reason it never stuck with me.

Bradley

Gaga is flawless so I expect this thread to flop. :sis:

Spoiler

Okay, she needs to start promoting Perfect Illusion on TV right now. Otherwise, what difference will Joanne have with Glory? Both are underpromoted records.

I know what you mean. She did mention that she'll be working with Arca again, and I hope that it's a little more experimental than Vulnicura. I still adore that album though, but my favorite will always be Vespertine. He could bring out a lot in her, I just hope she has the same visions as he does.

Mister Gaga

I have no compliments about Lana's, Florence's and Gaga's discographies. I wouldn't change anything about their songs.

But, for example, i'd like Lana to develop her visual vision a bit more, like she flawlessly did during BTD/P.
