First responders are at the scene of what is suspected to be a building explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City.

The New York Fire Department said the explosion that rocked the area was reported just before 9 p.m. Saturday on West 23rd Street in Manhattan, according to The Associated Press.

No information about injuries or the extent of the damage have been released.

A witness told the New York Daily News he felt and heard the blast while entering the 23rd Street subway with his family.

Ryan McMillen said he turned around and saw the back of an SUV "totally blown out."

"Everybody started running and screaming," McMillen said.

stay safe y'all :omg:

Some on Twitter are saying it was a bomb in a dumpster, but who knows.

There are photos of a dumpster blown apart. Earlier today pipe bombs went off at charity 5K marathon for U.S. marines that were planted in garbage bins. Don't know if connected but most likely terrorism or hate-crime related y'all.

Dumpsters have exploded before.

In December 2009, a 33 year old male fire fighter died and eight fire fighters, including a lieutenant and a junior fire fighter, were injured in a dumpster explosion at a foundry in Wisconsin. At 1933 hours, dispatch reported a dumpster fire at a foundry in a rural area. Eight minutes later, the initial responding crews and the incident commander (IC) arrived on scene to find a dumpster emitting approximately two-foot high bluish green flames from the open top and having a ten-inch reddish-orange glow in the middle of the dumpsters south side near the bottom. The IC used an attic ladder to examine the contents of the dumpster: aluminum shavings, foundry floor sweepings, and a 55 gallon drum. Approximately 700 gallons of water was put on the fire with no affect. Approximately 100 gallons of foam solution, starting at 1 percent and increased to 3 percent, was then put on the fire, and again there was no noticeable effect. Just over twelve minutes on scene, the contents of the dumpster started sparking then exploded sending shrapnel and barrels into the air. The explosion killed one fire fighter and injured eight other fire fighters, all from the same volunteer department.

I know, I didn't mean to jump to conclusions or anything. It's just hard to imagine a dumpster explosion of this magnitude on the same day that pipe bombs were placed in dumpsters across the river and it not be related in some way. Sounds like they might have found a second undetonated dumpster bomb just a while ago similar to what happened this morning. Guess we'll have some answers soon. Glad that no one was killed.

It's strange because there was a pipe bomb that went off in New Jersey on the seaside heights boardwalk during a marathon this morning at 8:30. I feel like something is up
