Perfect Illusion Promo Strategy

Hey everyone,

I have sat back and looked at Gaga's promo strategy this era around and it's vastly different to Applause, and I think it's early. What I consider Applause promo was pre-mature ejaculation when it comes to buildup and excitement. The MV and highlight performance of the single happened in the first week, leaving less to be desired in coming weeks. It was also overshadowed at that time by competing artists.

PI takes the build up approach. The old strategy would have had her performing on 3 different shows in the first week, but how it's laid out now is:

-Audio
-Chilled out radio interviews
-Club performances

Then as the song builds on streaming, radio and public mindshare

-TV performances
-Music Video
-Acoustic performances

This is a great trajectory for the single. And even better, they haven't announced dates for the second single/album, so they will be able to pull these triggers when they think it is the best moment, apart from the times in the past, when they needed to squeeze/change a second single to align to album release.

Good job Bobby :wub::firega:

She has to save TV promo for the album, she can't go to Ellen to perform PI and then go there again next month to promote the album, you know what I mean? I'd only go to the Carpool Karaoke or something like that and then bigger shows like SNL, Ellen, GMA, Jimmy Kimmel etc for the album

Applause needed those to survive the first week. The competition was brutal.

Since Perfect Illusion is a grower and the only absurdly popular song right now is Closer it can spread out its promo.

It's kind of hard to compare Applause and Perfect Illusion because the situations are so different

Justin Bieber was on Ellen like every other day during the purpose era :poot:

It's kinda like Gaga isn't famous and she is debuting, in a way :poot: I personally think this is not a good idea but I am not a manager, am I? Let me stay cute.

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

It reminds me of Just Dance -the song that signaled that she was a pioneer for that type of pop-dance music at the time - but took 1 year to reach the top. Hoping PI doesn't take that long, but to me, it's definitely a grower in that sense

She is more mysterious this era - something I loved in her initial eras. It leaves a lot to be anticipated for and also stops people from being disappointed because she's not hyping as much - which is a good thing.

The slow buildup will also stop over saturation.

It took a year cause Gaga was anonymous :flop:

I, too kind of get that sense. And I'm somewhat happy Gaga is a real underdog this time. Makes me expect less but root harder for her, and makes every achievement all the bigger and more surprising :excited2:

Tbh, she's pretty 'anonymous' now relative to the other pop girls, especially to the younger GP.

She has the smallest social media following out of the pop girls. I like the 'underground-pop' approach.

I still remember when she was the top dog by far. She was like a God to every other pop girl.
