ChasingGhosts 726 Posted September 12, 2016 Share Posted September 12, 2016 Opposition Leader Bill Shorten introduced a private members bill for Marriage Equality just after 10am on Monday morning, telling the House of Representatives that “A plebiscite would represent a fundamental failure of this parliament to do its job." and that “Putting the question of marriage equality to a national vote risks providing a platform for prejudice and a megaphone for hate speech.” Shorten went on to challenge the Prime Minister to get on with the job of delivering marriage equality as he promised, regardless of which party gets the job done. “What will stand for all time is extending equality under the law for all Australians…. It’s up to us to summon the courage.” Directly following Labour's bill, a cross-party marriage equality bill co-sponsored by The Greens’ Adam Bandt and independents Andrew Wilkie and Cathy McGowan was introduced.
