Clinton: "Half of Trump supporters 'deplorables'"

Hillary Clinton's campaign is standing by politically incendiary comments she made Friday night grouping half of Donald Trump's supporters into "the basket of deplorables," people who are racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic.

In an effort to explain the support behind Trump, Clinton, speaking at a fundraiser, also described the rest of his supporters as people who are looking for change in any form because of economic anxiety and urged her supporters to empathize with them.

"To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables," Clinton said. "Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."

She added, "And unfortunately, there are people like that and he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric."

Clinton then said some of these people were "irredeemable" and "not America."

She later apologized: 

Hillary Clinton expressed "regret" Saturday for comments in which she said "half" of Donald Trump's supporters are "deplorables," meaning people who are racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic.

"Last night I was 'grossly generalistic,' and that's never a good idea. I regret saying 'half' -- that was wrong," Clinton said in a statement.

She then listed a series of controversial moments from Trump's campaign, including his fight with a Muslim Gold Star family, criticism of a federal US judge of Mexican heritage and his insinuation that President Barack Obama wasn't born in the US.

"I won't stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign," Clinton said.

It's because all of his supporters are so shamelessly uneducated that it's not even dismissive.

One day I was wearing a barong tagalog (an embroidered dress shirt I got from a Filipino friend), and a Trump supporter saw it and was interrogating me like he knows something . The first question he asked was "Are you in ISIS?"  and I was so confused and he followed up like "you look Buddhist,"  and then said "we are going to stone you if you're Islam,"  and later asked "Where did you get that - the Middle East?" And I said "No, from the Philippines," and he said, "so Africa, right?"  And I said "No, Asia." He literally had no idea what any word he was saying meant. It was pathetic.

I believe it was on purpose. The racist, homophobic bigots are with Trump no matter what he says or does, so if doesn't matter if she offends them. There are lots of Republicans and Independents, that lean Republican, that are having a hard time being associated with a white supremacist and his loyal racist followers. They don't want to be in the fifty per cent and they don't want to be associated with a group where a large majority are bigots. I believe this comment was mainly for the white educated Republican or Independent-Republican who are struggling with voting for someone who has so many racist statements and values.

Did you see Rudy Giuliani get called out on MSNBC for Trump's supposed change of heart on this issue? Chris Matthews asked "Does Trump agree that Obama was a legitimately elected president and a U.S. born citizen" (something along those lines) and Rudy's first words? "Well, Hillary Clinton's campaign first brought up that issue!"

The inability of Trump or any of his people to directly answer a question just gets on my nerves so bad.

Though Rudy's been a mess for a while. I think my favorite comment he's made so far has been that, before Obama, there was no successful acts of (Islamic) terrorism on U.S. soil even though he was literally the mayor of NYC when 9/11 happened

Oh yeah. I wouldn't entirely disagree with her statement either tbh but I don't think it was a good idea to say it. Regardless of the truth or her intentions, she's really unfavorable right now. She doesn't need to add any fuel to the fire

For our sake, she needs to not only beat Trump, but destroy him to jerk the rug right out from under the dangerous part of the U.S. that he's woken up and validated.
