Perfect Illusion: Not her relationship with Taylor, but herself

Saw this on Tumblr...

What if the Perfect Illusion that was “mistaken for love” refers, not to her romantic relationship, but to the relationship between the real “Lady Gaga”–the Gaga-Stefani hybrid, the crazy and creative club girl from New York–and the “Lady Gaga identity” that she played into, as mentioned during her discussion with Jamie Lee Curtis: the identity that appeased the world’s expectations?

What if the Perfect Illusion was “the Lady Gaga of Yesterday”–the persona who often overshadowed the person, the outfits that frequently eclipsed the talent.

It’s interesting how Gaga, having started off in New York with performance art backed by Iron Maiden records, is now channeling that original flame again, the rock and roll that formed “Lady Gaga.”

What if Perfect Illusion is not about an actual lover, but the Lady Gaga personathat she had “fallen in love with” and the delusions of happiness birthed by that illusionary identity?

thats what I was thinking about whenever I listen to it. I think about how her early success was an illusion and it was perfect but now, her realness is shining through and its beautiful also

Yes! That is such a sensible explanation!

Walk down the runway but don't puke, it's okay. You just had 10 donuts today. Without frosting.

Guys, please don't make threads if you intend to close them, it's been an issue lately.

destinyofself, I really love your theory, I hope Gaga comments on it or says something of this nature.

That's what I wrote here the first hours of the song. Most of gaga fan accounts posting about taylor about this song. Lady Gaga is not a basic low-level woman who write songs about her valentines etc. PI has many different meanings and one of them is this.

What she thought about when writing it is secondary. You can analyze it in any way you want, and there's no wrong option. So this Gaga-Stefani theory is very plausible. I relate to the lyrics in a different way, but it's not better or worse, it's just different.
