Maybe ya had to be there.  It wasn't just the album....it was the era that was so crazy cool.  That whole feeling of it from buying the album, opening it and it smelling like patchuli...to Pepsi buying her out because the first video was so frowned upon...to the following videos...to the Like A Prayer Tour turning into the Blond Ambition World Tour.   It was just so different at the time.

I have a copy of the original vinyl album. It still smells like patchouli and has the AIDS awareness pamphlet that originally came with it. I love it!

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but for me, it's not only in my Top 5 favorite Madonna albums, but it's in my Top 5 favorite albums of all time. Also, there's one album of hers in particular that I think is overrated as F***, but I won't mention it because it seems to be one of the favorites on this forum.  :laughga:

Personally it's my second favorite album from her after ROL, it was a departure from her teen pop, intensely personal, and very musically sound. I think orignally the sound can seem dated but once you listen to it more and get past that it is an incredible album

I have the album too and it's in my collection!  Collecting is a huge hobby of mine and that's a keeper.  I agree with you 100%.  But I love this forum for all the opinions and it's always interesting. I bet you one of my sealed SEX books that I know exactly what album you're referring to!!!  🙈🙊🙉

I think True Blue is far more overrated. At least Like A Prayer was conceptually interesting. True Blue is always heralded as not only one of her best but one of the greatest most iconic pop records of all time and im sorry but everything on that record besides Papa Don't Preach is generic 80s nothingness imo. I really can't stand True Blues acclaim which to me is just an early example of stanning creating hype rather than it actually deserving its iconic status.

Me too! I remember when I bought the album. The guy told me that he hated to part with it, but that he really needed the money, and I promised him I would give it a good home. When I was in college and had to sell a lot of my Madonna collection because I was completely broke, that was one of the items I wouldn't part with.

I've never listened to any of her albums :cryga:. I have listened and liked her most successful/recent singles whenever they come on though.

I keep buying and haven't sold ONE thing.  Ya know she's gonna outlive us all too!!!   It's mad money though, my friend. I'm very glad I picked her to collect.  Some of this stuff goes for insane prices lately.  I also buy up Gaga's stuff each era while I can just in case.  We'd have fun talking this stuff all day. Haha.

I am SO jealous! I amassed a huge collection over the years, but when I was in college, I hit some hard financial times and had to sell a lot of really special items like rare picture discs and limited edition releases. I even had a huge cardboard promotional display for Music that held CDs. I have managed to get a few items back over the years, though, and like you, I jump on whatever special Gaga releases I can get!

Remember this was a very different era. This album spawned many singles, remixes, performances, promos, commercial deals, looks, iconic videos that were all new to pop back then. Did it age well? Will it resonate to this geneneration? Not necessarily but you have to take it in the context of the times and the impact it had in pop culture then and now. Madonna has no power now but back then or in the spawn of her career everything was very impactfull and it had huge ripple effects. That's why young people don't get it now but when she dies they will see it.

It is not overrated, it deserves the praise it's given.

After True Blue, she could have just stuck with churning pop singles but she didn't. She went with a different sound, wrote about her own personal life, and at one point wanted the whole era to be a brunette phase until **** Tracy forced her to dye her hair back to blonde. The record itself is essential to her career. Like a Prayer is a juggernaut of a song most pop girls would kill for her. Express Yourself continues to live on if you catch my drift. The Prince collab is half baked but I mean, she sings about her marriage breaking up, the death of her mother, her hidden disdain for her father, so many topics that proved her artistic growth long before Ray of Light and which showed she had some depth behind her and packed with powerful visuals, this is usually seen as the peak of Madonna coupled with Immaculate Collection, I'm Breathless, and the BAT.
