I have thought of another option: Maybe she's catering to critics and is trying to become Grammy-bait so she can scoop up the awards and be considered as a legend based on the quality of her music. Of course, if this is the case, one would have to ask what's the use of the initial hype for Perfect Illusion and all those radio deals and interviews. Tbh all of the monsters' rationalisation (that she doesn't care for the charts, she wants to become more indie less mainstream, that she's focusing on the album not the singles) make sense except for the fact that initially PI was treated like a normal lead single by a major top 40 artist.
