I mean, a mother losing a child is already too much, but to find out that she's probably also being toyed with by government and forces she can't quite comprehend, all while also realizing she herself knows she sounds insane but isn't? It was how a parent would react on the brink of desperation and insanity. If they want toned down, go look at the Poltergeist remake where the parents acted like they couldn't have cared less.
