Why Troy was the reason ARTPOP flopped

Hello Guys.

During 2011 Lady Gaga released her third Album 'Born This Way'. The Videos caught attention and the Album sold amazingly well.

During ARTPOP, the Album didn't sell as well as expected. Personally, I think Troy is the reason, here's why.

When Gaga first signed her record deal with Universal Music, it was made clear that she won't get any money from Streaming. After Born This Way, in 2012, a lot changed in the Music Industry due to Songs like 'Harlem Shake' (the recreated Videos gathered Streams) or 'Gangnam Style'. The Influence of these Videos is crazy if you look at it now. Streaming started to be a part of the Charts. When ARTPOP came around, Troy did never focus on Streams - which have a huge Influence. Never any Spotify deal or anything, because he knew he would not make any money out of it, and maybe even underestimated the power of streaming. You can see that he still does. 'NO' did not reach the #1 Spot because of weak streaming. The Reason why Miley was so high in the charts was also because she had a lot of streaming. Anaconda had weak sales but amazing Streaming.

Point of this is, if Troy wouldn't have been so money hungry and would have put more money into streaming deals, ARTPOP and the Singles wouldn't have performed as badly.

I want ARTPOP to be certified at least 1x platinum but at this point, I'd rather contribute/work on it, than keep going back to why it still isn't certified :air:

It's already platinum based on streams etc in 2016. Bobby just needs to update her certifications! :excited2:

Love GaGa!

The Surrealist

First of all, ARTPOP did not flop. It Just had lower sales than usual.

Here are the reasons:

1. The music - it was not well produced, containing too much R&B and Hip-Hop elements which were poorly made. The production was not good either.

2. Depression - Gaga's break up with Troy and losing fans made  Gaga Not care anymore.

3. Too many promises - which were not kept.

4. The General Public - they already lost interest in Gaga when all of the other popstars started to copy Gaga's shocking outfits and scandals.

5. Katy Perry - her perfect Image and catchy songs appeal much more to the the GP.

6. It had no concept - Gaga had no idea what to say with this album, but she tried to keep the image of being selfaware.

@Noah Do you know for a fact that they didn't get money from streaming or are you just guessing?

I think Troy was obviously a huge reason why ARTPOP under-performed, but Gaga was also to blame. The tenuous concept of the album was interesting in theory but far too vague and confusing for anyone to relate to it. The lack of perceived 'artistic' songs was also a major criticism considering the album's name.

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

Sadly, this. Aside from ARTPOP and Applause lyrics, very few other songs had to do with art

I think that was where the album concept got too confusing and vague. I believe Gaga intended the album to be purely pop music, while everything else surrounding the album was art (like the performances, the outfits, the album cover, the Koons sculpture, the paintings she did with Robert Wilson, the Ambramovic Method, etc). But obviously the critics and general public don't "see" all that, they only judge the music...which was lacking the art she had promised.

I see what Gaga was trying to do with this era, but she just wasn't successful in execution. I still loved it though.
