I don't disagree with you. But there is a difference in her SOUL and her creative spirit. Her heart. There is a vast reservoir of beauty, creativity, love and free-spiritedness in Gaga that has held my attention since the first moment.

You summed it up perfectly :golfclap: I was reading your replies in this post and and I pretty much agree with you on everything.

Gaga is truly something else. She's just so...genuine. Everything she does comes right from HER -- something that's been lacking in pop music for decades. You know what I mean?

I see people here saying "oh, but what about Bey and Britney????" and I'm like " really :awkney:".

Open your eyes people. Beyonce is a puppet. She is a talented performer but I don't find her genuine at all. I loved Lemonade, but Beyonce didn't create it. The monologue was written by someone else. The songs were written by teams of people in rooms. None of this screams "genuine artist" to me.

And don't get me started on Brit :neyde:

I honestly believe Gaga is the most versatile artist of this generation. One day she can bleed on national TV and be puked on and the next she's doing a Sound of Music medley, and the next she's hanging upside from a ceiling for Robert Wilson, and then she does an R&B tribute to Stevie Wonder. Grouping her in with Ariana Grande and Katy Perry is a crime.

I don't know if my hate for pop music is as strong as yours though. I think most music on the radio today is trash but I listen to it anyway

But pop music hasn't always been bad. It was at its best between the mid 50s and the mid to late 80s imo. Everything just goes downhill from there. (As much as I love disco music, I blame it for kicking off the decline of pop music.)

P.S: I love Bat for Lashes.

P.P.S: ABBA is the greatest pop group of all time :diane:

P.P.S: This reply is already disorganized af but I agree with you when you say that The Fame was your least fav Gaga album. ARTPOP might have flopped but it gaves us some of Gaga's most genuine songs to date, which is why I love it.

I think you're being a bit tough with GGD - Britney or Beyoncé have been heavily discussed lately because they've both had releases recently, and also because, yes, they are big in the musical landscape. But if you look closely, artists you've mentioned like Lykke Li or Bat For Lashes have had threads about them before - I would actually not really consider these artists underground like you've mentioned, I mean both have had features on the Twilight soundtracks... but anyway, that's not the point.

It's good that GGD and Gaga more generally bring together people from different horizons, with different musical tastes. I mean, I encourage you and everyone else on here to keep on discussing these things, and hopefully help other members broaden their interests.

Why don't you create threads for these artists then so you can discuss? Instead of complaining about how pop music is most discussed and calling it garbage just make a thread. You're going to attract people with similar interests.

I like some of the music you posted but I'm sure thousands of others would call it garbage and terrible. It's all subjective. You categorise as if pop music is the lowest form of music and intelligence when it's simply not true. Just because say Beyonce is the face of the song doesn't mean that the one who produced/written is any less of an artist if you understand me.

Gaga is a pop artist but she is very subversive. Her music however fits in that pop sphere.  It makes me wonder if you like her so much because you've invested time in her character/persona and that has an impact on the music.

Maybe if you invested your time in the life and character of another pop artist it would influence their music and change your perception.  Just a thought.

If you think overproduced dance songs with lyrics like "last night damn you were in my sex dreams" and "love it when you call me legs, in the morning buy me eggs" are any different from the other pop girls you're deluded.

GaGa is a POP singer. Let's not forget that her first(and most successful) era was literally about the art of selling out.

She's better than the rest, but she's in the same lane.

Gaga's pop songs are more complicated than most pop star songs. For example, Applause isn't more complicated in terms of production than the average Katy Perry song but the Bowie-esque vocals and performance art lyrics give it a different twist. It happens with most Gaga songs: they have a pop background (usually in the melody) but there are elements of the song which make it slightly alternative

Do you think Bloody Mary is a song a normal pop star could come up with? Government Hooker? Scheisse? Swine? Aura? Teeth?

Even her biggest pop hits (Bad Romance, Poker Face, Born This Way) would be super-mega-weird for stars like K.Perry, T.Swift, Britney, Rihanna...

you are so so right about this.

artists like Gaga (and Beyonce) push pop music forward, like all the greats before them did. while half-baked "singers" like Katy Perry are trying to lower the bar down to keep making money with their low-quality garbage.

however, I love pop music. it might be shallow and meaningless most of the time, but dancing to a Britney song once in a while makes me feel really good about my life. of course, I also like lesser-known singers from different genres of music, but my heart is pure pop.

I want Gaga to be super successful with LG5 just to prove to the world once again that yes, pop music can be better than Katy Perry & co. it doesn't have to be low-brow.

Yas!!!! I mean I like pop music and I always have (many songs incorporate multiple genres nowadays though so a lot of music could be considered pop), but I love this post

You're not alone!

I mostly listen to indie rock/alternative/metal music and I despise pop music myself. I love Gaga though and I listen to Lana as well.

Why must people always bring down other artists here in order to praise Gaga. Yes, she's great but no, she's not that special. She's just as manufactured as most pop stars, which is fine.

I feel you. I'm pretty much the same, there's something particular about Gaga that captivates me. The only other 'pop' star that appeals to me is Sia.

I don't necessarily disagree with you or your taste, but this entire thread just reeks of pretension and snobbery.

"The kind of music I listen to, most of you have never heard of it, and would probably never have any interest, because it's all underground artists and they're not mainstream pop celebrities." My eyes rolled so far all the way to the back of my skull. Using "mainstream" and "pop" as negatives makes me feel nauseous.

"GGD would be SO much more interesting if it wasn't focused on Britney." It would be more interesting for you. Yes I agree that Gaga has more to offer than most other pop acts, but that doesn't change the fact that she is a pop act and thus is probably going to share a fanbase with other artists from that genre. What do you expect? If this site isn't "interesting" enough for you then why are you here? I'm sure there are other forums where you can discuss your pseudo-intellectual favs, continuing to get your Gaga fix on GGD whilst simply ignoring threads about artists you don't enjoy.

I love music. I make and release my own music. I have a degree in music. The beauty of it lies within it's vastness and how we can all enjoy it in completely different ways, and that should be respected. While I do believe that some music has an objective level of quality, it does not come in genres. There are some great and talented mainstream pop artists - like Gaga and many others - while there are "underground" artists that are far less talented.

You're asking people to embrace your tastes whilst dismissing theirs as unworthy and "garbage". High horse, much?

I definitely agree with you @wahkeenasitka I'm in the same situation, altough for pop music I also love to listen to Allie X (even though she makes pop music, she is not in the mainstream public and nor she wants to be). I saw that you posted a video from Lykke Li in this thread and I ADORE her.

I mostly listen to Electronica, Trip-Hop and IDM (Intelligent Dance Music)

Some of my favourite artists (other than Gaga) are Björk, Grimes, Massive Attack and Depeche Mode.

She definitely does. She even said in an interview she wants her songs to get radio play and she thinks she has something to add to pop music. I think with Collxtion II we'll see a more ambitious effort to become widely known.

Did you know that a lot of Metalheads love Gaga and hate the rest of the pop girls/boys?

It's super weird and kind of amazing how she's the only popstar they really, really like and admire

That's me basically.  I like a few independent minded pop stars who have real talent... Gaga, Pink, Adele for example.   Gaga has always had an underlying rock sensibility to most of her music and rock fans pick up on that.
