Let's talk about Lorde

I definitely consider her a one hit wonder in the grand scheme of things. Some people will try to convince you that she's more than that but sorry, when you've only had one hit and you're approaching 3 years post-debut and still have no sign of so much as a lead single, there's nothing more for you (unless she pulls a Mike Posner but his album wasn't successful, so...). Yes, Team may have gone top ten in the US, but only her fans and hardcore music followers know of it now. Hardly a hit. Her new single off the extended re-release and her work on The Hunger Games soundtrack passed like ships in the night. Only the biggest followers of music still know or care about her. Let's face it, Royals got big precisely because it was so unusual, that's why a lot of one hit wonders stay that way - the public doesn't actually want this sound 24/7, they just want a quick respite. Does the public really want a girl who can't sing essentially talk-singing about the evils of the world over a stripped-back beat? I won't deny she's got potential, but the industry has portrayed her to be some sort of prodigy that's talented beyond her years (you tend to get that treatment if you put pen to paper under the age of 21, it seems) and she seems to be believing her own hype. There have been people who have made better music at her age, let's not get carried away. Her best tracks for me are Bravado (I actually got chills) and Buzzcut Season. But she needs to apply this level of quality throughout all the work. The rest of it just doesn't cut the mustard quite as much.

Besides all this, her attitude really doesn't do anything for her. From the beginning, she was a straight-up narcissist, thinking she was better than every other girl in the industry just because she didn't sing about sex and kept herself covered up. She never seems to smile and is too aloof. She's taking her time with this album because she thinks she's something amazing who will always have fans waiting for her when she takes her own sweet time to come back. And I think those around her are enabling her to think this way (what do you expect from an artist who sings the line: "I was raised up to be admired, to be noticed"?). Only an arrogant person would take this long to make a follow-up to an album that only spawned one hit. I don't get it, it's not like Pure Heroine was a long album that exhausted her to make - just 9 new songs on it and the extended version consisted of one new song and the rest was stuff from her previous EP and a cover. In 3 years, she's only released 3 new songs. What's taking the time? As a young artist, she should be chomping at the bit to make and release music. If she's getting bogged down with writer's block after just one album, maybe being worldwide famous on a major label isn't for her.

I think shes great. I don't think she lacks work ethic. I think shes an actual music artist. I think shes taking her time, living, and creating. Shes not limiting herself by hopping on the pop-female hampster wheel that her peers are running on. Shes doing her thing and her album will come out when its ready.

the majority of this hate rant is so ironic considering you stan for lana del rey: "thinking she was better than every other girl in the industry just because she didn't sing about sex and kept herself covered up. She never seems to smile and is too aloof." okay....and lana and her stans think shes better than everyone because she sings melancholy songs with melancholy instrumentation and talks about luxury and daddies and drug use. edgy. shes all aesthetic and almost zero substance but fools get that mixed up because they hear a string orchestra and therefore equate that to profound quality. in my not so humble opinion lorde is much more of a genuine artist than lana ever has proved herself to be, which is actually why shes taken so long to record. its not because she arrogantly expects people to buy into her next album, its because to make worthwhile music you have to go out and live life and experience things. and in being a teenager she needed to do that. shes creating and living her life. shes not plagued by the same album-tour-break hampster wheel that most others are, even lana. whether or not this next album will be any good is anyones guess, but I cant sit here while yet another lana stan lays into lorde for not being good enough or some **** when you stan for one of the most entitled, unoriginal, and overrated artists on the scene.

BuzzcutSeason

She needs to ****ing release a ****ing album its been almost 3 ****ing years and she's so young i thought she would have more ambition. (She probably does but like release an album before its too late). I lowkey feel like her mainstream success is over with. Atleast with radio stations and such.

I love her tho and wish the best.

You aren't the first to say that my views on certain artists are invalidated because I'm a Lana fan. It's really quite tiresome and borderline offensive, considering how the implication seems to be that I'm stupid in some cases. You've made a big assumption there. I don't think Lana's better than everyone else because of what she sings about, I just think she's a good songwriter and producer, that's it. There's all different ways to make good music and her way is just one of many ways. I can differentiate aesthetic and substance, thank you very much, and I actually think her music is very deep and she's highly intelligent. I can assure you that simply hearing a string orchestra isn't enough to make me think a song is profound quality (just as I don't think that just because there's a stripped back beat, like Lorde, that a song is profound quality either). I don't see why Lorde is any more genuine than Lana is. I don't think Lorde's been around as long or made enough music for us to really get a handle on her yet. There's all different ways to be genuine. Maybe some people just see Lana's style and way of talking and assume she's being fake when she's not. Remember that she suffers from depression too and that can really affect how a person portrays themselves. Yes, to make worthwhile music, you have to go out and experience life but when you're young, inspiration should be spilling from every pore anyway. That's why most artists make the majority of their music in their early days but start taking bigger gaps when they get older. Because you start running out of inspiration when you've passed all your milestones in life and experimented. Lorde should be at the height of creativity right now and becoming famous since her debut should have provided her with no end of inspiration. And I hardly think Lana's entitled when she says that she doesn't care how her music performs commercially, she's not unoriginal when she was the first one to do her style of music in a long time and said style has been ripped off countless times by artists who don't mention her as their inspiration (like Lorde, for example!) and she's not over-rated when she had to fight for critical acclaim and considering that she's flopped post-debut.
