Fair enough, Gaga is amazing for sure. And I'm sure someone will post, it's likely to be a tremendously iconic performance.

They were the ones who hyped the VMA performance on Twitter and if it turns out to be fake, all hell will break loose. If they were truly just teasing with no real info, they should come out NOW and tell us not to get hyped.

What I don't understand is if she isn't performing at the VMAs why didn't she wait to annouce the single release after the VMAs?

If she performs the VMAs I wont be surprised but if she doesn't I wont be pressed. I just think the timing of the announcement is suspicious. Why did she announce PI when she did? It was obviously calculated. I just don't think her management is dumb enough to miss out on the 2nd biggest stage of the year (VMAS) to debut new music. September is literally just a few days away- and who knows- maybe she used September in the context of a timeframe that applies to radio listeners only. It could be an Illusion. If she releases the single the night of the VMAs and debuts the video on Friday + releases it to radio (September 2nd) the purchases from Aug.29th through Sept 

Also to clarify, just because music is traditionally released on Friday it doesn't have to be. That's not set in stone. An artist can release their album whenever they want, they aren't bound to some rulebook that says "you have to release your album / single on Friday". Global release date used to be Tuesday then it was changed to Friday a few years ago. That's just something that makes it easier for distributors like Target / Walmart / Bestbuy and it also is a good date to release stuff for chart purposes. When you're big as Gaga though you don't have to be as precise with scheduling because you're going to pull outrageous numbers just by name recognition. She wouldn't need the full tally week to have a successful debut like someone say like Tove Lo or Ellie Goulding. (Not to mention the boost she would get in sales from a surprise VMA closing performance of a new single followed by immediate digital release). People would turn off their TVs and go to town streaming the song and buying it because they wanted to hear it again asap. 

 

For example using January:

Friday, January 1 – sales tracking-week begins, streaming tracking-week begins

Monday, January 4 – airplay tracking-week begins

Thursday, January 7 – sales tracking-week ends, streaming tracking-week ends

Sunday, January 10 – airplay tracking-week ends

Tuesday, January 12 – new chart released, with issue post-dated Saturday, January 23

Lmao, you're acting as if the VMAs were the best promo spot of all time. The Hotel first episode gathered double the viewers of last year VMAs. She'll be fine.

Well we aren't the only ones speculating her to be there- the speculation of her maybe just maybe performing will raise the viewership of this years event. PS, every year Gaga doesn't attend the VMAS that particular years ratings tank. I think people are going to tune in to see Britney open the show and then after her performance they tease a surprise performance that ends up being Gaga... I just dont know a better way to debut new music besides the Grammys. Do you? 

 

EDIT: And to be completely fair, The VMAS kind of gave Gaga her big launch into stardom in 2009 with her Paparazzi performance. So don't dismiss it as not being an effective platform. It also supercharged Miley back in 2013- her short lived peak was kicked off with that Robin Thicke deal and the foam finger and that skimpy outfit.
