She has a history of performing songs before they are released with SwineFest. She could perform at the VMA awards as a way to hype the single (and even the music video) before it's official release. She doesn't need to compete with the other artists performing at the VMA awards, because her single hasn't actually been released yet, but it has generated more hype for the music video and/or songs release a week later. I'm just saying, I don't think it would be a lie, as OP suggests, if she performed it at the VMAs and she then released the song and made it available for purchase the week after.
