The Curious Case of 'Digital Distortion'

In October of 2015, Iggy Azalea announced the name of her sophomore album. She named it Digital Distortion.

 

In December she announced that the lead single would be called "Team".

 

In January of 2016, she released Azillion on Soundcloud (a song that i really liked). Azillion was supposed to get a music video as a promotional song. However, the record label scrapped it. Iggy then expressed her desire to leave the record label and be with Def Jam.

 

 

In February Iggy shared the album cover to Digital Distortion.

 

Iggy's lead single "Team" was then released on March 18th and the video followed on March 31st. "Team" actually received positive reviews from music critics, but the song did not receive the same amount of love from the commercial audience. The song stayed on the Hot 100 for 8 weeks and peaked at #42.

 

 

In May Iggy confirmed that Digital Distortion would be released on June 10th.

 

Later that month Iggy said that she would be delaying the album because of a collab she was working on with Zedd. The new date was scheduled for June 24th.

 

However, in the middle of June Iggy announced that she would be delaying the album again because of her new role on X Factor Australia.

 

In mid-July Iggy told Las Vegas Weekly that she finished her album but she was dealing with a lot of unexpected personal issues so she delayed it more to take care of herself. She also told them that the album would be out in August.

Iggy announced at the end of July that she would be releasing a new single with French Montana and also revealed that she recorded a few songs with Kesha. She also is set to perform at Jewel Nightclub in Vegas on August 26th and had stated that her album would be out by then 

 

So here we are in mid-August and Iggy has been mum about anything going on related to music. She actually been buy watching the Olympics. I would say this era is almost as messy as ANTI was before it was released. It all worked out for Rihanna though, so maybe it will for Iggy too.

I'm disappointed that it's been pushed back so much. I loved Azillion and Team but I need more 

It could be a multitude of reasons really but I think her label aren't helping the situation. Team may not have been the biggest chart topper but it was moderate and was generally well received. 

Considering her relationship drama as well it's not surprising it's been delayed. She should take her time and heal because that was a rough breakup.

My best guess/opinion: The album was mostly finished but the first single flopped so it caused Iggy and/or her label to reconsider the sound of the album which led the album to be pushed back indefinitely while new songs are being worked on. After a long enough period of time has passed, a 'new' lead single will be released to try to re-start the era (similar to the situation that happened with Ariana Grande's 'Focus'). Being a judge on X-Factor Australia provides a good cover for her delaying the album.

Her label is Def Jam, isn't it? They always make great choices, like that time when they signed some random girl, but then dropped her, and then she became the new queen of pop. They really know how the business works, don't they?

I was thinking about this too. I didn't know she'd shown a physical example of the album cover, though - it's amazing! Admittedly, I didn't like Azillion, apart from the last bit. But Team was very good, one of her best ever, and the views for both videos (especially when combined) ain't half bad. But it wasn't a big hit like Fancy, so her promo campaign was stalled, suggesting there's going to be a new lead single. There are rumours it's going to feature French Montana, which wouldn't be surprising. No doubt her label think Team's failure is a sign that she can't get a solo hit. It wouldn't be a completely negative thing though as rappers tend to use featured raps on their singles far more often than solo anyway. It's quite unusual to be solo now, so it doesn't exactly reflect badly on her. But it's sad if she had to re-direct the path of her album to fit with chart expectations. I feel really sorry for her. She has so much promise but gets unnecessarily hated on despite being no worse than a lot of current mainstream rappers out there (and there are worse). It's a shame that such a genuinely sweet girl can't get success when rappers with bad reputations and bad attitudes have no problems selling either.

I'm not sure about her career being over but she hasn't been "trending" as much as she was in 2014 including the fact that Team pretty much "flopped".
