Teal Ambition 47,805 Posted August 11, 2016 Share Posted August 11, 2016 Thousands of Portuguese emergency service workers including soldiers and civilian volunteers on Tuesday continued to fight wildfires affecting 10 large areas of land. Portugal remained on high alert following a wave of wildfires that has swept the country with around 350 isolated fires affecting swathes of the countryside. Firefighting efforts were particularly concentrated in the central region of Agueda, according to a report issued by civil protection authorities. The nine other areas affected include the localities of Viana do Castelo, Castanheira de Pera, Gondomar, Viseu, Arcos de Valdevez, Gouveia, Vilanova de Cerveira, Barcelos and Arouca. On the Atlantic island of Madeira local government officials have created a contingency plan to tackle four areas of wildfire on the archipelago. There were suspicions that up to one third of the fires could have been ignited deliberately, authorities said. On Wednesday about half of the north was on alert for fires with the risk assessed as between "heightened" and "maximum". More than 3,000 people have been battling to contain roughly 100 fires across the country with 12 major blazes leading to the evacuation of local residents overnight. Even that wasn't enough, and the government requested help from other European Union countries. Some of these fires are rather close to my house there but I don't think it will reach. We were going to eat on the patio of our house, but ashes were falling so fast that we just had to eat inside. The heat was practically unbearable as well because of the fires.
