Well, most of Michaels top 40s you could play at any party and ppl would know them or have at least heard them (and they'd love them as well if they were in their right minds)...can't say the same about Kanye - who's definitely a big deal and who I respect as an artist, but c'mon...

This is comparing apples and oranges. 

The Hot 100 chart methodology has completely changed from Michael's time to Kanye's. During Michael's hit years, it was a requirement to have a physical retail single for sale in record shops for a song to be eligible on the Hot 100. 

Today, any song (including album tracks) are eligible. So when an album drops, tons of non-singles chart. If the charts worked this way during Michael's eras, he would be light years beyond Kanye in Top 40 hits.
