Bernie doesn't rule out running again for president

He could run in 2020 and easily win

Just being completely realistic here, depending on how Hillary's first term goes, it'd probably be even harder for him to challenge in Hillary in 2020 when she's the incumbent than it was this time. For one, incumbents typically win. Only 10 incumbent presidents have ever been booted from office out of 44 presidents. Beyond that, the only precedent for an incumbent president losing his party's nomination is Franklin Pierce, who lost the nomination of the Democrats in 1856 to James Buchanan (which seemed to be a pretty smart move for the Democrats because Pierce was heavily disliked and they were able to hold onto the White House with Buchanan, but I digress).

The most recent example of a formidable opponent to an incumbent president within the same party was Ted Kennedy's campaign against incumbent Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election (resulting in a fairly close 10-7 million popular vote race), but Carter still beat Kennedy (and then lost to Reagan; maybe the Democrats could've won with Kennedy?). So my point is that it's incredibly difficult to beat an incumbent because the "I've already been president for 4 years" argument seems to prevail indelibly against all else. The president has to reach a certain threshold of unpopularity, coupled with circumstances at home and abroad, to be pushed out of the Oval. The incumbent also tends to have the financial resources and support of the Party and the political backing needed to fend off any insurgent candidacies.

And that's just one part of it. All of the problems Bernie's campaigns faced this election he would still face against Hillary in 2020 – closed primaries, likely no debates (Hillary would not agree to even one debate because that only legitimatizes a fringe candidate and can only hurt her), difficult voter registration, polling places that close early and turn people away, a heavily biased mainstream media... the list goes on. Bernie is a visionary and a wonderful man, but he's also smart and knows when to hold back. I don't think he'd challenge in 2020 for the reasons listed above and also because he's endorsed Hillary and I don't think he'd go back on that and potentially ruin his chances in 2024. Thus, I think his best shot would be at trying again in 2024, and I believe the DNC might support him then in the same way they supported Hillary this time.

I agree, it would be very hard to beat her in 2020 but I think he could use the next 4 years to fix some of the problems he had this year. He could become a champion for African Americans and do better with the black vote, he could've won this race, if he cut into her lead with them. Better preparation and more experience could help him.

And let's also not forget that Bernie was funded by his supporters last time and outspent her in many states, so money may not be the problem. And I think the democrat electorate will go further to the left too, so that could help him. Overall, it would be extremely challenging in 2020 but with the proper strategy and preparation, it's not impossible. And it wouldn't ruin his chances in 2024, if anything it would help him. Exposing him to more potential voters, possibly gaining him more popularity and make him more viable in 2024.

Oh, definitely. Bernie definitely made several crucial mistakes as well. He should've put more time and resources into the South, where he got completely demolished by Hillary.  He shouldn't have dismissed her "damn emails" scandal, but fully exploited them for the example of poor judgement that they were. I truly just don't think he hit her hard enough. He ran the high-road campaign, but that only goes so far. He was going up against one of the most powerful politicians in the country. I think if he contrasted himself and Hillary further, built up his support amongst black voters and Southerners, he might've carried states like Kentucky and Missouri and been a more formidable opponent in states where he was destroyed (Florida, Georgia, Texas – heavily populated states that his campaign seemed to gloss over and take laying down).

I don't think it would kill his career, but I think it would piss off a lot of Hillary supporters. Overall, don't think it'd be in his best interest to pursue a 2020 campaign.

I hope he feels up to it tbh. He's already pretty old but age is just a number :yay:

Besides, he's only six years older than Hillary.

There's a difference between "something negative" about Hillary tho and flat out saying Bernie's too old.

It may piss some off for sure but people forgive in politics. I don't think it'd hurt him in the 2024 primary. And he may win in 2020 if he fixes his mistakes from this time and brings the same enthusiasm to the electorate. Especially because between now and 2020,  Bernie is gonna be a big part of getting more progressive people into congress. So Bernie may have some big accomplishments in the next 4 years he can run off, so he can run on the revolution platform but show that it's more realistic then people think. I wouldn't mind if he waits until 2024 but I hope he gives it a shot in 4 years. After all, he said "defying history is what this campaign is about", so he wouldn't be afraid.

also about ur comment that the dnc would support him, they won't. They'll support the next establishment person in line, probably Tim Kaine.

Not to be pretentious but having an 87 year old as a president doesn't sound such a good idea. :madge:

Especially here in America were things move too quickly:interestinga:

Whispering

Against Trump? Because he isn't going to run against Hillary.

Would he run as an independent? The list would be long four years from now against Trump and the center candidates will do the best against a Republican in office.

Four years from now is a lot longer time, when considering his age. A campaign is exhausting and challenging physically. I can't see him doing it again, but you never know.

Bernie is aging very well and other countries have had older leaders, Israel recently had one that was 91.
