Trump would support $10 min. wage

(CNN) - Donald Trump said Tuesday he would support raising the federal minimum wage to $10 an hour, a departure from his previous assertion that wages are "too high."

Asked to clarify his position at a press conference on Wednesday morning in Doral, Florida, Trump said once again that the federal minimum wage should be raised to "at least $10" but that "states should really call the shots."

"As an example, I live in New York. It's very expensive in New York. You can't buy a hot dog for the money you're talking about," Trump said. "You go to other states and it's not expensive at all. Now what it does is it puts New York at a disadvantage if the minimum wage is, companies move out and things -- you know, bad things happen. At the same time, people have to be taken care of. But what I'm really going to do with minimum wage, it has to go up."

Bernie Sanders assailed Trump on Monday night at the Democratic National Convention, telling delegates that the GOP nominee "believes that states should actually have the right to lower the minimum wage below $7.25," which is the current federal minimum wage.

At the press conference on Wednesday, Trump said Sanders "lied."

"Bernie Sanders said in his speech the other day that Donald Trump wants the minimum wage to go below $7," Trump said. "I said, 'Where did he come up with that one?'"

He also supported trans* rights before going back on that. He said he supported gay rights before telling voters he'd appoint judges to the SCOTUS to undo the decision in 2015.Then he said his Muslim ban was just a suggestion before doubling down on it and exploiting 49 people's deaths for his hateful and illegal idea, but not before patting himself on the back.

I don't trust a single thing he says. People say Hillary flip flops? He's a pancake in a wind tunnel.

President Trump

so everything else will go up and the people that already make more than $10 an hour will be downgraded, and feel a reduce in spending ability

Minimum wage needs to be atleast 15 an hr. That is considered a living wage

No country has a minimum wage that high!

You will claim Australia and Luxembourg, which have the highest minimum wages, are both around $15 US, but measured by the purchasing power those wages give, Australia's wage is equivalent to $11.14 US, and Luxembourg's to $11.43 US. Measured by purchasing power, the highest wage in the world is Monaco's, at $12.55 US.

You're saying $10 US is not enough? Again, measured by purchasing power, the following countries have minimum wages around $10 US, +/- $0.50:

Germany = $10.43
Belgium = $10.31
The Netherlands =  $9.81
New Zealand = $9.76

And those countries rank #5, 6, 7 and 8 on the list of highest minimum wages in the world measured by purchasing power.

$10, "starvation", lmao.

It actually doesn't work like that. Prices only go up a little, if at all. People on minimum wage gain spending power when it goes up, improving their lives directly, and increasing economic activity in general, so everyone gains.

Lion Heart

Trump said once again that the federal minimum wage should be raised to "at least $10" but that "states should really call the shots."

These contradict each other.

A better title would be: "Trump contradicts himself on minimum wage." Explanation:

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2016/07/27/3802419/donald-trump-changing-minimum-wage/

In an interview with Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly, Trump took three different positions on the issue in less than 30 seconds.

When O’Reilly said to Trump, “There has to be a federal minimum wage. What would you set the federal minimum wage at?” Trump’s immediate response was, “There doesn’t have to be,” suggesting that he believes there doesn’t have to be a federal minimum wage at all.

But with his very next breath Trump went on to say, “I would leave it and raise it somewhat. You need to help people, and I know it’s not very Republican to say.” That would indicate that he believes that the wage needs to be raised because wages are too low.

And yet when Bill O’Reilly asked specifically what Trump thought of a $10 federal minimum wage, Trump responded, “I would say ten. I would say ten… But the thing is we’ll let the states do it.”

If a minimum wage increase is left up to the states, however, that doesn’t require any action from the federal government. And that’s exactly what’s been happening since the minimum wage was last raised by Congress nine years ago: Republicans have blocked attempts to increase the federal floor, while a majority of states have increased wages on their own. But that still leaves 21 states with the $7.25 minimum, meaning residents making the minimum wage have experienced no increase.

O’Reilly himself tried to pin down Trump’s position on the minimum wage toward the end of their exchange, to no avail. “So we have you on the record as $10 minimum wage federally and states can do whatever they want?” he said. “No,” Trump replied. “You have me on the record as saying the states are going to raise it higher than that.”

Trump’s contradictions continued on Wednesday morning. In a press conference, he said, “The minimum wage has to go up… At least $10. But it has to go up… Federal.”

Yet in the very next moment he said, “But I think that states should really call the shots.” Those two ideas are at odds: if the states are left to their own devices, that won’t mean a federal increase, and some states will very likely choose not to increase their wages.

I think we need to focus on making corporations raise their wages for workers. A national min wage is tricky when you also include small businesses. Trump isn't wrong about making states figure this out. It's just not a simple answer. I of course want the min wage to be increased, but it's not as simple as small may think.

???!

I work two jobs and it's still barely enough, both are 10$ hr jobs. And that's just from personal experience. 10$ won't pay these bills

And? It's not any different in most every other country. Some people in this thread are acting like Trump is a villain out of a workhouse in Oliver Twist because he proposed increasing the wage to $10, bringing the US into line with other first-world countries. :toofunny:

I will say it is a start, but literally 10 isn't enough. Like honestly it just isn't enough money for people to survive
