I searched the internet and was able to find a place with digital versions of Billboard magazine from years past. Billboard's website currently only includes year-end charts from 2006 to 2015, so finding these was exciting for me as a chart freak. I couldn't find 1995 and 2005 which is a bummer cuz those were good years in music. Anyway, here are the top 5 female, male and duo/group artists from each year.

Anyone surprised by any of them?

Happy to see one of favs up there?

I refuse to believe Madonna doesn't qualify to be in the top 5 of at least 1998 and 2000.

I mean, for example, ROL had the biggest first week opening sales of any female artist ever in the US. How the hell does that not get in the top 5.

She was the #6 female in 1998 and #9 female in 2000 and #11 in 2001. The Music era was split between the two years @Didymus

Must have been good times. Unfortunately, I was a bit too young at the time.

THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING. And 1994 Madonna was still reigning with Bedtime Stories. I refuse to believe she was not in the top 5 for any of these years. Ansolutely ridiculous!

Bedtime Stories era was mostly in 1995, that's when take a bow went big. Billboard year also starts mid-November and the album came out October 25. So if i could find 1995, i quarentee Madonna would be in the top 5 of females

#6? :rip:

So she was behind Monica? :chica:

ROL first week sales: 371,000 copies
TBIM first week sales: 91,000 copies

I get that in terms of singles, Monica (and the others in the top 5) wins but it just doesn't feel right. Anyway, thanks for clarifying!

welcome.

And that was the year of The Boy is Mine for Monica. The album has three #1 songs including the mega hit title track with Brandy. Ray of Light had a #2 and #5 song.
