Have y'all even seen the platform on LGBTQ+ for the GOP? Trump is just pandering for votes... The Paypal guy, who spoke and also is gay, was pandering as well. I'm not buying any of it.

EVERY POLITICIAN IS PANDERING FOR VOTES.

But here we're talking about a group of people. People that the GOP platform would rather see dead than thriving.

The GOP do not want to kill gays. They are not all Fred Phelps. Quit with the hyperbole.

Surely that makes his comment about the LGBT community even more noteworthy. He is going against his party's platform and the opinions of his chosen running mate to mention his support for the LGBT community. At best he is using his political capital to challenge the opinions of his base, at worst he is pandering to more socially liberal voters. Either way the inclusion of the LGBT community in both Trump and Cruz's speeches at the RNC should be seen as a sign that the Republican Party will exert less effort making us out to be sexual deviants.

The idea of a Trump presidency is terrifying, but we don't have to pretend like this wasn't a noteworthy and progressive moment. The Republican Presidential Nominee thanked the audience at the Republican National Convention for applauding the LGBT community.

This "inclusion" of the LGBT only happened after a Muslim killed LGBT people in a terrorist attack. If this event didn't happen there would be no conversation about LGBT rights except the one where they take thier right to get married.

Context is always important and the context here is that Trump is only using the LGBT community to prompt his fear campaign, not to push open conversation inside the GOP. His real intentions are pretty obvious, just look at his VP pick.

They just want to strip them of the right to marry, and thus their rights of inheritance, medical intervention/visitation and tax status. They want to allow businesses to discriminate against them. They want to remove their right to adopt children. They want to remove their ability to serve in the armed forces and they want to force LGBT youth to go through conversion therapy.

But...I guess they get a gold star for not wanting to kill gay people. Please! :smh:

There is no doubt the the prepared portion of the remarks we are talking about was written with the intention of fueling the "us vs. them" nonsense which his entire camping is based on. The audience at the RNC was applauding Trump's vow to fight radical Islamism, they weren't cheering his support of the LGBT community. However, it's Trump's response to that cheering which is notable. He goes off scrip (something he hardly did during this specific speech) and made a point to thank the Republican audience for what he perceived to be a warm reception to him mentioning the LGBT community. THAT is what is notable about this.

Regardless of how terrifyingly divisive Trump's campaign was, he didn't run a campaign defined by the restoration of "tradition family values."

Well he may not be the biggest homophobe out there, he just chooses them as VP.

Trump is guilty of being a lot of things, but homophobic isn't one of them.

As for Pence, yeah he is horrible. But he has also reversed policy positions he held previous to him becoming the Vice Presidential nominee which conflicted with Trump's positions. It's safe to assume Pence will follow Trump's lead when it comes to not prioritizing "family values."

Pence is awful, the Party platform is awful, but Trump himself is ambivalent about gay rights.
