you know, 'commercial' and 'experimental' are labels with which you can put her, her songs, and her musicianship in a box. she has never and will never conform to any preconceived idea; what she will do, however, is make music that sets her and her fans free. :nick:

I consider Bad Romance as experimental because she really broke all the ****ing boundaries of pop with this song, BR is not radio friendly AT ALL!!!

The structure of the song itself and the instrumental are nowhere near experimental. It's a pop song, a good one, but a pop song.

I see experimental and commercial as the opposite sides of the same coin. Until someone can provide me with a satisfactory definition of what it means for a song or an artist to be "experimental", I will just take it to be synonymous with being original. Under this definition, Gaga is entirely experimental. Her albums sound like no-one else. I can't picture anyone else singing her songs.

I agree. If Bad Romance was released by anyone else in late 2009 it wouldn't have gone anywhere. Gaga made us love the song, even though when you examine it it's so damn gothic, so techno and so operatic.

I think that he meant that it's weird for the top 40 radio

I can't ever classify any of Gaga's songs experimental, especially because she's never made a song that is not your typical pop structure.

most of her music is both to some extent commercial and experimental hence why it's so unique (compared to most top 40 stuff) y often easily accessible. I think her music provides the perfect equilibrium between the two ...more so in the beginning than recently though.

I live for her experimental music, it's what made me fall in love with her.

I would call Judas more commercial than experimental...

It's a tricky question, of course I prefer when she does experimental, I want her to be original, to push the boundaries and do what the other popular singers don't. But what is she better at ?

Obviously she's good at creating commercial music, she can easily make catchy songs with tunes that stay in your head and catches attention. But she's able to surprise us with more experimental sounds, even in the commercial music. Personally I prefer this type of music a lot, in my favorite songs you can count Heavy Metal Lover, Bloody Mary, Swine... Generally her singles are my least favorite songs from the albums, with exceptions like Paparazzi (this one made me a fan) or Do What U Want. And let's not forget about the in-between, like the ballads, that we can't really call commercial or experimental but that she still masters to do : Yoü and I, Speechless...
