Just because the coup is removing erdoğan, it doesn't mean that they are any better, or that they won't be worse than him.

So who's side should we be on?

The government or the police? Is one more corrupt than the other?

Military is progressive and secular, AKP regressive and islamist. Whenever the government moves too far to the right, the military comes in. This is also the reason why the Turkish military is quite small.

So basically the military coup is committed to restore democracy in the way Atatürk intended it (France-like secularism).

Government = Islamist and seems to be growing more and more like a dictatorship

Military = Wants to impose secularism, democracy, human rights. Whether they do that or not if the coup is succsesful, I don't know

Pain is often the price we must pay for freedom. :( Most of us on GGD are lucky that the fights for our rights occurred generations before we were born.

Turkey was founded by Mustafa Atatürk as a secular democracy; the Turkish military is sworn to defend the secularism of the country, and Erdogan has since his inauguration attemped to impose Islamism on Turkey as an autocratic dictator. The Turkish military have clearly had enough and are simply obeying their oath to their founding father to preserve the secular democracy of their own country.

Erdogan claims coup was initiated by Gülen movement, a religious (conservative) movement with big control in Turkish police and military. Don't know if that's true.
