China has no historic rights to South China Sea

The Philippines won an arbitration case submitted to the Hague. The Philippines successfully challenged China's excessive claims in the region while relying on international law and peaceful approach.

Why is this important?

1/3 of the world's trade passes through the West Philippine (South China Sea) and the area is believed to be rich in oil reserves and marine life. China claims nearly all of the sea and has been dredging and reclaiming areas for their naval bases as a show of power that could destabilize fragile peace in the region. The South China Sea is one of the potential flashpoints in asia especially since the US has been pivoting towards the region.

This morning, after nearly 3 years, the Hague finally reached a decision.

Thank you! Much of the Chinese still believe in Sinocentrism. I can't believe their logic most of the time. This is why them hating Gaga for talking to the Dalai Lama wasn't a surprise to me. They really think they own the whole sea based on "historical claims". Can you imagine Italy claiming all of Mediterranean and its surrounding lands?

I hope China really does stay out of the Philippine's territory. China is in constant need for natural resources because they are depleting their own really fast.

I'm glad coz I come here so often and really do like this country, my country is one of the few that sided with China on the matter and it baffles me how much influence China has here

Like China is just a few centuries too late with regards to expansion

Well every ASEAN country needs China either militarily or economically.

Unfortunately, as China becomes more of a superpower like the US, their economy depends on harvesting resources from around the globe, not to mention with their huge population to support. I hope China respects this decision, but I won't bet on it especially with the growing navy at their disposal. What could the international community do to stop them, should the Chinese take control of the South China Sea anyway?

Also, isn't it strange how the US remains out of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea? Is that something superpowers can abide by without compromising their influence?

I've been to the town closest to the Scarborough shoal. The market had tons of fresh fish, many of which could not be caught in other parts of the archipelago. The market was bustling.

Fast forward 3 years after, the market is dead. The fishermen have sold their boats. All because the Chinese are scaring off other people, people who have fished there for centuries and are well within their EEZ.

It won't. China has trashed the legitimacy of the court since day 1. They insisted that other unconcerned nations should not be dragged into the issue and yet, a month before the verdict, they rallied for popular support from other nations, nations who aren't even concerned geologically or economically with the sea in question. What kind of backward, hypocritical logic?
