Same production thecnique, always Pro Tools, samples, etc. No step further for the art, just rythms and sounds that the industry knows they will work on radio.

And those techniques are?

And those rhythm and sounds are?

I'm still struggling to see why you class her as basic. A lot of her music (especially album material) doesn't sound like stuff that would 'work on the radio'. If you could give actual examples or explain your answer with a bit more depth that would be great.

True Megan only won because she was the most popular but I do like Megan so I think she deserved it.

Really excited to hear it. It can't be much harder to write a song better than the awful Bad Blood, right? Katy's normally good at writing diss songs (Hot n Cold, Circle The Drain, Part of Me), so this might be pretty juicy. There's never been an actual single as a Taylor diss song before, so this could be something else. If Taylor can do it, why can't anyone else? She needs to learn that you can't just go around throwing shade at everyone and expect them to lie down and take it. No answer to a diss song is basically saying "you were right" these days, so, you know, it's a matter of giving as good as you get.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I think those things should be obvious. She relies heavily on the set Dr Luke sound (California Gurls and Tik Tok have been cited as the same song before for a reason) that is guaranteed to give him hits. She also features a level of current trends in her music (dance pop, urban pop, bubblegum pop) and uses this "rent a rapper" nonsense to get her singles to #1. She also puts references to brand names and name drops things that are popular (Cherry Chapstick, Happy Meal, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Daisy Duke, Mariah Carey, Chanel, Mustang, Radiohead, among others). She even admitted once that she browses tumblr just to see what kind of things are popular right now. The thing she talks about in her songs are told pretty generically, especially her break up songs. All her ballads are extremely similar as well and are usually some of her blandest work, except the ones on Teenage Dream. She knows what sells - break up songs, empowerment songs and stuff about having fun, which is why that's the majority of her singles content. There's a reason why she only has one obligatory ballad per album era, because that kind of stuff doesn't sell for her.

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

You could be describing nearly every pop artist here yet I don't see those things as 'basic' either.

Some of those things you labelled as basic also apply to Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna etc. It's not a bad thing to know what sells and to be interested. It's a business too.

I was hoping you would have told me from a technical/sound point of view what 'basic' is because that im genuinely interested in.

Well, yes, there are a lot of pop artists like that. That's why pop has the unfortunate stereotype of being generic and lazy.

Knowing what sells is all very well but as an artist, you should strive to out what's in your heart. After her heartfelt ballad, Unconditionally flopped, Katy reverted right back to releasing the most obvious single choices from Prism and the mature, deeper image she aimed for was lost. That video sticks out like a sore thumb alongside the rest of the silly, immature stuff from that era.

It's hard to pin down what basic is from a technical/sound point of view because basic is subjective and there's no set beat that could be called generic. Something music experts refer to frequently is the "pop music chords" that feature heavily in not just pop music, but a lot of other popular songs too. I once saw an online music reviewer saying that Don't Stop Believin' by Journey was the epitome of the traditional pop song chord structure and every time he reviews a song that has these chords, he pulls up an image of the piano sheet music for Don't Stop Believin' and declares something like: "Pop song chords, know them, they own you!" If you research the idea about the four pop chords, this is an official Wikipedia definition: "A common form of the progression, vi–IV–I–V, was dubbed the sensitive female chord progression by Boston Globe Columnist Marc Hirsh. In C major this would be Am–F–C–G (Am–F–C–G/B voicing is very common in modern pop music). Hirsh first noticed the chord progression in the song "One of Us" by Joan Osborne." Now, as someone who doesn't play an instrument, that doesn't mean much to me. But people who play instruments sure are attuned to it and can work out when songs all sound the same. But I've got a very good ear for music and can easily point out when a song sounds like something else and I can tell you, much as Katy's music can be a great guilty pleasure for me, most of her songs sound the same and are just your typical pop song. I even noted all the lines from Roar that have basically been copied and pasted from other songs.

So you want her to be a loner releasing music in order to be successful ?

I'd rather have the Gaga/Katy combo again. It makes GGD really enjoyable...

Um... risking her single flopping for GGD "buzz worthy threads" IS NOT worth it...are you serious? :awkney:

That's how Applause flopped and Katy and her basic music won...

Gaga being the only one with a brand new single out leaves her to being more likely to have a successful era without feeling the need to OUT DO anyone else...
