In this case the graphic was almost certainly anti-Semitic, having been reportedly created by white supremacists... but Trump's intentions in posting it were not anti-Semitic. A gaffe. It happens.

I cant think of any reason at all why one would use the shape of a "sheriff's badge" but I am not alone in finding reasons one might use a Star of David coming from White Supremacists

Intent is not the end all to determining whether or not something was appropriate 

Also, hes posted things by white supremacists before. He is running as a candidate for President of the United States still didn't have the foresight to check the source of things like this? Even then, he didn't have someone do it for him? Knowing that hes gotten (a disgustingly low) amount of flack for it that might turn him off from even more voters? Donald Trump's entire campaign has pretty much shown that he doesn't "really" mind being compared to, getting support from, or even shouting the same rhetoric as white supremacists though, so its not surprising  He probably doesn't care because their rhetoric fits what a lot of his supporters honestly believe, and he knows ignorant old white people, misogynists, sexists, gun fanatics, and "backwards" southern people will show up to vote more than young socially progressive "aware" independents who are skeptical of government
