Donald Trump on Tuesday evening declared his fondness for torture, likened a new trade deal to the “rape of our country,” and joked with a man wanting a job by offering him one if he agreed to a 10 percent pay cut.

In other words: If last week was Trump’s “pivot” to becoming a more serious presidential candidate, it’s been followed by a pivot right back.

The 48-minute speech to several thousand supporters crowding the Ohio University Eastern Campus’s gym was trademark Trump, meandering across topics ranging from his various successes, to the “stupidity” of the country’s leaders, to his views of torture in the fight against ISIS.

On waterboarding — a technique that makes subjects feel they’re drowning — for example, Trump recounted what he’d said at a Republican primary debate. “I like it a lot, but I don’t think it’s tough enough,” he said to cheers and laughter.

“Can you imagine them sitting around the table or wherever they’re eating their dinner, talking about the Americans don’t do waterboarding and yet we chop off heads?” he said. “They probably think we’re weak, we’re stupid, we don’t know what we’re doing, we have no leadership. You know, you have to fight fire with fire.”

If a group of people kills gays, drowns people in oceans, beheads people, and have no respect for women them yes of course we should torture these disgusting people. It makes no sense not to, you can't be nice to these animals that call themselves ISIS.

because when you advocate torture you're not different than them.

They can say the same like you, how is it sick what they do, when Americans are blowing up their kids to pieces. 

How is that excuse?

Besides, this method was used on people who were often innocent, imprisoned years without charge in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. If you know about the rape and torture stories in those places, it's interesting that you'd support that.

They're still human and the entire point of this ideological war is to not reduce yourself to their level.

What more will it take than scientists proving over and over again that torture does not work in a context like this? Why aren't people connecting the dots between American war crimes and reactionary violence from the other side? Fighting fire with fire is what both parties are doing. You really want to align yourself in terms of philosophy with your enemy? I sure don't.

All this does is put the spotlight on a few individuals to keep us from asking questions about the bigger forces that are keeping these conflicts moving. Disgusting, and disappointing that people are still falling for it in their eye for an eye ideology.

On a more practical note, it's also ultimately pointless because those under torture will tell you what you want to hear to make it stop.

By your logic, every civilization that has ever existed can be reduced to beasts including the USA for its treatment of the Native Americans. ISIS is actually quite tame compared to most powers less than a century ago. Before you quote "but it's the 21st century", let me remind you how much warfare and instability that region has seen. It might as well be 2000 years ago.

Contrary to recent belief, most of their fighters aren't evil. They're just misguided people fighting for a cause because they have no other option. At least they don't believe they do. 

The point is to show them that they do, by cutting the head of the snake rather than incinerating it.

Except it's been proven over and over again that torture doesn't work to reveal information

And yes they are human. That's what makes it scary. Hiding from that truth is only going to slow a quicker progress to solutions.

I absolutely cannot at these people who supposedly despise religion for its disgusting ideologies and logic replicating exactly what they're so proudly claiming to criticize. Not saying you're doing that because I don't remember if you're one of those, but still throwing it out there.
