The three names you used were those that partook in the BBC/ITV debate (there were plenty of other front campaigners like Gove), but regardless - the user you quoted used the word 'pioneered', as in - they (UKIP - or Cameron's fear of them I guess) were the reason the Tory manifesto even included the referendum in the first place. 

Aside, Leadsom also abstained from voting for same-sex marriage on some historic ground so she's not exactly a poster-girl for a forward thinking leave campaigner

I think this headline is misleading for many people.

It's worth noting that "hate crimes" in the UK are different than "hate crimes" in America or Canada. In fact, most wouldn't be crimes at all.

"Hate crimes" in the UK include, for example, racist or offensive statements on social media. Personally I don't consider that all too newsworthy...
