It was not immediately clear how far-reaching the ruling will be because of the specifics of the Texas program at issue. A Texas law guarantees admission to the university for students in roughly the top ten percent of the graduating class of any Texas high school. To fill the remaining slots, about one fourth of each entering class, the school considers several other factors, including an applicant’s race. That last step was the program under court challenge, upheld by the justices Thursday. The school said students learn better when there’s diversity on campus and within racial groups. But a woman who was denied admission, Abigail Fisher, filed a lawsuit claiming the diversity standard was too vague to justify making distinctions based on race. Edited just now by LebaneseDude. People should be admitted to schools based on their grades and personal merits. Race, money (as long as they can afford tuition in the first place) or influence shouldn't be a factor! No one should be denied admission so they can make room for a worse student who happens to have the "right" skin colour. Affirmative action helps most is white women get into college, skin color is not the only criteria. 47 students with worse grades than her got in, only 5 were black. The lawsuit was against those 5. And this, in America, would probably lead to a lot more Asians in these select universities, according to various articles. But so what? If they are studying so hard they deserve the placement. Also what about football players or athletes that get scholarships purely based on sports with very little to do with academia. It seems weird to go only after affirmative action. It's just a political talking point. That attorney would never go after sports scholarships and good old white boys who would never get in based on grades alone. Unless Rupinder is truly abysmal in all other qualifiers, I sincerely doubt Jimmy will win out unless the university requirements are already low and Rupinder is overqualified. It will make them triple the cost and with much less resources. It will decrease the amount of scholarships to students with amazing grades too.
