The only reason Western cultures are offended by this is because we treat dogs and cats like family, whereas pigs, cows, and chickens are treated as food..... We literally do the exact same thing to millions of animals, yet people here are less offended by that because our culture is accustomed to view those animals as food sources.

Afaik, dogs were specifically bred from our early days to become our companions, while pigs & cows were specifically bred for food.  Plus, eating dogs is significantly less efficient, compared to eating cows or pigs.

REALITY

It's sad, sickening, disgusting, etc. to see animals treated in such a inhumane way, but we cannot point the finger at them without first looking at us. In the United States especially, dogs and cats are honestly looked at as special, while animals like cows, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, etc. may not be looked at at the same level as dogs and cats.

While it's cruel and absolutely terrible, I can't for the life of me understand why we can't look at ourselves in the same light and say "Hey, what we're doing is just as wrong and just because we may not domesticate cows, chickens, pigs, etc., that doesn't mean that we should treat them any less than any other animal". In China and other places, I'm sure dogs and cats are looked at as similar to how sheep, goats, cows, etc. are looked at here, just as herd to eat.

While what they're doing is just wrong in every sense, I think people need to reevaluate what their meat industry and what the our food industry is doing to other animals before we can start pointing fingers.

I don't see the difference between this and meat eaters period. If dogs and cats can come off as delicious, then so be it. Just because it's one of the few animals humans failed to domesticate does not make them less delicious or good for you. This is no different from cows, chicken, and game meats.

If I was in a country where it was legal, I probably would try cat or dog. Even though I love cats and dogs. I also love deer, but venison is ****ing awesome.

vegan people need to watch this

Definitely an interesting and important discussion to have. It only increases the problem though, so not exactly a good argument against vegans alone here :emma:

I've been petitioning this and trying to raise awareness of it for a while.

Over 10,000 cats and dogs, mostly pets and strays, will be tortured and eaten during the festival, even the Yulin government have taken a stance and distanced themselves from the festival however it is privately funded.

I urge people, whether they feel this is hypocritical or not, to take a stand. Just because some may eat farmyard animals doesn't mean this is any less wrong.

http://reappropriate.co/2016/06/misguided-protesters-target-nycs-chinatown-over-dog-meat-festival-in-china/ This was an interesting read that my friend referred me to when we were talking about the festival. I'll just post the relevant bits (even though the entire thing is relevant). This article is about the protestors of the Yulin festival in NYC Chinatown but raises some important points.

"Animals are not by nature categorized as “food animals” or “companion animals” — this is a human conceit (...) Animals that Americans typically consider to be cherished pets are traditionally eaten in other Western nations, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses. Dogs slaughtered in Yulin are not treated less humanely than some livestock raised for consumption in America, where cows, pigs and chicken are routinely housed in deplorable and unsanitary conditions (...) It is culturally imperialist to assert that food sources [we] might find unappetizing has no business being on someone else’s plate...

For centuries, anti-Asian stereotypes have included portrayals of Chinese as barbaric consumers of dirty and unimaginable food sources. The stereotype of the “Heathen Chinee” typically associated Chinese immigrants with the frequent eating of rat or dog as evidence of their cultural and moral inferiority to Whiteness, thereby co-opting a cultural culinary tradition to rationalize white supremacy (...) It should come as little surprise that the parts of China where canine meat is consumed are also predominantly rural areas where livestock may have been historically and seasonally scarce. In America, anti-Asian stereotypes about dog and rat meat were further reinforced by the fact that early East Asian immigrants to America were often trapped in indentured servitude and ghettoized to ethnic enclaves where more conventional food sources were simply inaccessible and unavailable. There is a certain economic privilege in moralizing about certain food sources, when the tradition may have its roots in systemic hunger and poverty (...) Today’s animal rights activists ignore Asian Americans’ history of enduring stereotypes of the “Heathen Chinee” when they confuse the enjoyment of dog meat by some Chinese people as endemic to all Chinese people.

Never mind, of course, that animal rights are increasingly an important issue for Chinese citizens, amid rising dog ownership among China’s wealthy and middle class. Since the festival’s inception in 2009, it has faced profound public backlash within China as activists gather at the festival and purchase and save dogs destined for slaughter. A recent poll suggests that as many as two-thirds of Chinese people oppose animal cruelty and support animal products produced humanely."

Most replies here seem to acknowledge the double standards people have with dogs/other animals, but I still can't believe Americans were protesting in Chinatown though, ridiculous.

heard they steal people's pets for this stuff. if thats true then all this talk of "dont judge their culture" is without context given as to why some people are outraged. pretty sure though that the post was created with intention on showing dogs being killed as wrong but theres more to it than just which animals our cultures view differently.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

I weep for humanity and its obsession with political correctness.

it's not Western culture, it's not double standards and it's not hypocrisy.

humans are animals too, you know. is practising cannibalism same as eating chicken?

it's not, because people are emotionally dependent on other people. we seek loyalty. something dogs offer us. for tens of thousands of years they have lived with us, slept with us, shared food with us, hunted our food FOR US, KILLED FOR US and SAVED HUMAN LIVES. dogs CRY when their owners die FFS.

that is why it's disgusting.

and to think the Chinese worshiped them as the most advanced beings after humans and dogs literally fought alongside them in their wars...

supposedly, consumption of dog meat in China has existed for at least 25 hundred years but it was always an alternative they called "stinky meat". other Asian cultures and some African cultures also have a history of eating dog meat but it's something that the whole world has gradually grown out of doing even when there's a shortage of nutritious foods. this has only been revived during the 20th century Chinese and other Asian famines. stop defending it, it's not Chinese culture.

and condemning it is not Western culture. it's compassion.

unfortunately when two hundred flamingos are being slaughtered in Africa, there will be a bigger uproar and repercussion around the world, than when there are two hundred kids being bombed in Iraq. Because the flamingos are prettier and the Iraqis spread Shariah.

Burning and cooking them alive? That's ****ed up.

And it's ****ed up no matter WHAT animal it's done to- I think it's ****ed up for crustaceans as well, so don't come for me.

Also annoyed by how people think eating dogs is horrible but would smash on a pig roast. The way we "value" and rank animals is truly bizarre.

Cannibalism isn't eating another "animal," it's eating the same species. Humans diverge from chicken at the Class level, with chickens going to Class Aves and humans Class Mammalia.

It's also not cannibalism to eat cow or dog, since even though all are Mammals they are in completely different Orders.

Anyways. Even if you are upset about "political correctness" as it relates to having compassion for all animals, even if you think that it's not hypocrisy or a double standard to be mad about this but not bat an eye at eating a cow, I still think it's pretty shitty to be butthurt about eating a dog but think it's totally fine to abuse a cow for food just because good ol' Bessie isn't likely to curl up in bed next to you.

You talk about how "it's compassion," yet you apparently only have compassion for the animals who are willing to sit at your feet. Compassion isn't about extending a hand to only the things that will lick it for you, it's about extending a hand to living creatures regardless of what they will provide for you in return.
(At least that's how I view compassion. )
