do your 18-track ABBA gold list! i'm curious. :nick:

01 I Have a Dream
02 People Need Love
03 Honey Honey
04 Waterloo
05 Mamma Mia
06 S.O.S.
07 I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do
08 Dancing Queen
09 Chiquitita/Fernando
10 Voulez-Vous
11 Does Your Mother Know?
12 Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
13 Lay All Your Love On Me
14 Head Over Heels
15 The Day Before You Came
16 The Visitors
17 Super Trouper
18 Thank You for the Music

that was hard.

first of all, I don't really like Money Money Money, Knowing Me, Knowing You and The Winner Takes It All. pretty stale, honestly.

I wish I could've included The King Has Lost His Crown, If It Wasn't for the Nights, Lovers Live a Little Longer and Summer Night City but that would make 9/18 Voulez-Vous songs lol

and Like an Angel Passing... is a masterpiece but not really its place here.

on-topic, starting the year after ABBA disbanded, it took Madonna 3x the time and 100x the involvement and resources to produce the songs on Celebration, so no matter whose songs you prefer ABBA will always be the more impressive pop music masters.

We are only comparing songs. I think Madonna is more legendary but on these two particular GH albums I think ABBA wins.

Yes I know what the thread is but I was talking to someone who made the argument that ABBA is more legendary in general...

People who aren't from Europe don't know how legendary ABBA's music is. Literally everyone will know the hits whereas people would only know a handful of Madge's

I'm from Europe and would massively disagree with this. Once again, not to diminish ABBA's legacy or their vast amount of hit singles, but people in Europe only know a handful of Madonna's singles? That's simply not true. She's the highest selling female artist ever. I'd say both artists have a large number of memorable singles that most acts could dream of, but Madonna was active for longer due to ABBA's disbandment, which makes her more legendary in my eyes as she's relevant to more generations.

That being said the popularity of ABBA's singles of course lives on, especially thanks to the Mamma Mia musical and film. But Madonna has achieved a lot more and that's indisputable.

what makes her more legendary is being an MTV generation artist, an 80s cultural/fashion icon and a 90s sex symbol.

and I've lived in both Eastern and Western Europe and I am pretty sure most people only know Like a Virgin, Like a Prayer, Vogue, Justify My Love, Music, Hung Up, Sorry and 4 Minutes whereas everyone over 16 is familiar with 20+ ABBA tunes, some of which aren't even included on their GH.

ABBA - 16

Madonna - 2

Not surprised, ABBA is classic pop and will always be timeless in my eyes

@T E A have you seen the ABBA museum that recently opened up? I feel like you would appreciate it

Indeed, those things have all cemented her legacy as one of the most important pop stars of all time.

But you think the likes of Holiday, Papa Don't Preach, Material Girl, La Isla Bonita, Into The Groove, Ray of Light, Frozen etc are just forgotten? To blatantly dismiss the amount of huge hits she's had is slightly absurd and confusing to me... Her track record and consistency is undeniable and almost unmatched by anyone. Your evidence is purely anecdotal but the numbers speak.

And this point is very general and nothing to do with comparing her to ABBA so perhaps off topic here, but of course ABBA have an abnormally impressive amount of hits within a relatively small period of time. There's no denying that.

well I forgot Holiday and La Isla Bonita but the rest are likely only remembered in the UK. is that where you're from?

and how is my evidence anecdotal? I'm just saying I have observations from different European cultures. and ABBA sold as many records as Madonna with much less releases and much less sales from the US and UK markets so what "the numbers speak" is that they are indeed more successful in continental Europe.

I know a lot of people who are familiar with pretty much all of Madonna's singles discography but it's still mostly the gay community that recognizes her for having a great catalogue.

Mamma Mia! The Musical is the 8th longest-running Broadway musical of all time with 5,758 performances and its close to Les Misérables

Obviously people remember their songs
