A lot of people want to dismiss her as a "tumblr darling" just because shes a fan of Lana Del Rey and Marina and the Diamonds and what not even though she sounds nothing like them thematically, vocally, lyrically OR sonically People who don't like her are pressed by her tbh, just like they are by anyone who gets remotely popular and isn't a traditional pop girl I can't imagine what the threads and discussion around Lana Del Rey were like when she first came out with Video Games and was highly commended for it The bitterness I imagine. Her music is a bit same-y thematically but that was the idea with Cry Baby, and I really actually like the entire project of approaching and tackling contemporary childhood ideals, stories, etc. and juxtaposing them with the realities of adulthood. It's not a new idea, but it was well done imo and her visuals are usually pretty on point too. Also she manages to make good hooks and melodies that are different from track to track. The production is also to me a good combination of twinkly childhood toys and dark beats In summary, her music is polished and well thought out. Also, she uses what vocal talent she does have to good use. And I'm not big on pop music. Other than Gaga and Madonna, I don't listen to pop. Melanie is the exception. A true artist. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next, but her debut is good enough to keep me happy for years to come if she decides to take a break.
