Donald Trump has fired his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, according to two senior aides within the Trump campaign.

News of Lewandowski's departure was first reported by The New York Times.

"The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future," according to a statement from Trump's spokesperson Hope Hicks.

A senior Trump aide told ABC News that Lewandowski's firing "was a long time coming” and that the campaign “need[ed] to get everyone on the same page.”

Aides have grown frustrated with the lack of teamwork between Lewandowski and campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was hired after Lewandowski. The campaign is expected to make other changes including new staff hires in the coming days. Aides also said Trump has “complete confidence” in Manafort.

Lewandowski was fired during a meeting this morning at Trump Tower with the candidate and campaign leadership.

This is probably a move aimed at getting him a new GE ready campaign. Trump and him were close, so it's possible this is the RNC's way of "taking the reigns" on a train wreck.

Be weary. If Trump stopped saying stupid things and recanted a lot of his statements, he still has a shot at the White House.

That's what I was thinking. After his mexican judge fiasco he started using teleprompters and giving focused speeches. Democrats may cheer his mistakes, but if he learns from them and changes then watch out, because Hillary is very beatable. The left are acting as if the election is over.

"Dropping poll numbers" ? They blame him for that? Why not look at the elephant in the room (Trump).

Donald J. Trump has fired his divisive campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, a move that comes as the presumptive Republican nominee faces challenges as he heads into the general election.

“The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said in a statement.

Mr. Lewandowski steered Mr. Trump with a general approach of “let Trump be Trump” through his upstart first-time campaign.

Trump is facing the urgent task of broadening his team to include people with previous presidential campaign experience. Mr. Trump also has been turning his attention to fund-raising for the first time, which Mr. Lewandowski had assumed oversight of and something that has gone slowly for the campaign.

The loss of Mr. Lewandowski was intended as part of a larger shift toward the final sprint of the race, according to those briefed on the matter.

The campaign manager was seen as having a hostile relationship with many members of the national press corps who cover Mr. Trump, and many officials at the Republican National Committee had strained relationships with him.

In a brief series of interviews on Monday afternoon, Mr. Lewandowski tried to brush aside questions about the internal circumstances of his departure.
