Spoiler

Labour MP Jo Cox has died after being attacked in her constituency near Leeds.

An eyewitness said the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying bleeding on the pavement after the incident in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

The attack took place near the town's library where she held advice surgeries.

Ms Cox was elected to the seat of Batley and Spen at the last general election in 2015.

The attacker was named locally as Thomas Mair.

Ms Cox was regarded by Labour colleagues as one of the brightest stars among the intake of MPs who joined the Commons at last year’s general election.

The 41-year-old former head of humanitarian campaigning at Oxfam made a mark by calling repeatedly for Britain to do more to help the victims of Syria’s civil war.  She remained in regular contact with former colleagues in the aid world who are working to help refugees in the region. She called Commons debates on the plight of the refugees and believed the UK Government should do more both to help the victims and use its influence to bring an end to the conflict.

(...)

Vote Leave, Stronger In and Labour In For Britain have all said they will suspend their campaigns in light of the shooting.

Here is the the opening statement by Dee Collins, the acting chief constable of West Yorkshire Police.

I’m now very sad to have to report that [Jo Cox] has died as a result of her injuries.

Before going into further detail I would like to express our deepest sympathies to her family and friends at this tragic time.

Jo was attacked by a man who inflicted serious and, sadly ultimately fatal, injuries.

Subsequently there was a further attack on a 77-year-old man who sustained injuries that are non life threatening.

Shortly afterwards a man was arrested nearby by local uniformed police officers. Weapons, including a firearm, have also been recovered.

At 1.48pm Jo Cox was was pronounced deceased by a doctor who was working with a paramedic crew that were attending to her serious injuries.

This is a very significant investigation with large numbers of witnesses that have been spoken to by police at this time.

There is a large and significant crime scene and there is a large police presence in the area.

A full investigation is underway to establish the motive for this attack.

There are specifically trained officers with Jo’s immediate family who are fully aware of what has taken place and we would ask the media to respect their privacy at this very difficult time.

Additional officers are working in the local community this afternoon and evening in order to provide reassurance and support to our communties.

Clearly, as this inquiry is at an early stage and we have an individual under arrest, we are not in a position to discuss any motive at this time.

We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

A 52-year-old man is under arrest. Police are also investigating reports the suspect shouted “Britain first”, a possible reference to the far-right political party, as he launched the attack.

A witness Hithem Ben Abdallah, 56, who was in the cafe next door to the library shortly after 1pm, said the MP was involved in an argument between two men. He told PA a man in a baseball cap “suddenly pulled a gun from his bag” and after a brief scuffle with another man the MP became involved.

“He was fighting with her and wrestling with her and then the gun went off twice and then she fell between two cars and I came and saw her bleeding on the floor.” The whole incident lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, Abdallah said.

Another eyewitness, Clarke Rothwell, who runs a nearby cafe, told the BBC he believed the MP had been shot and stabbed multiple times. He said: “Three times she was shot, the initial time which then she dropped to the floor and two more times. The third time he got close proximity he shot her round the head area. In the meantime he was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife.”

...

Cafe owner Clarke Rothwell, who witnessed the attack, said he heard a "loud popping noise that sounded like a balloon burst - a loud balloon".

"When I looked round there's a man stood there in his 50s with a white baseball cap on and a jacket with a gun, an old fashioned looking gun in his hand," he said.

"He shot this lady once and then he shot her again, he fell to the floor, leant over shot her once more in the face area.

"Somebody tried to grab him, wrestling with him and then he wielded a knife, like a hunting knife, just started lunging at her with a knife half a dozen times. People were screaming and running from the area".

Ah I see, that's tough, as stricter screening may be harder to do on the borders.

It easier to get guns in some parts of Europe, alone through the black market. And since we have open boarders it's really easy to smuggle tbh :emma:

Two children of 3 and 5 will have to grow without their mother. A whole family will be devasted. This man is a monster. How can a topic as "unsignificant" as EU become the motive of a murder ?! That's ****ed up.

When people sneak illegal items over borders they usually find unsecured sections where they don't need to be screened. Think about how illegal immigrants get into the US - the same applies to items. That's why bans don't work, people can and will smuggle. When someone is looking to do harm with a gun they don't care if the gun is legal because what they plan on doing is already far worse.
