Actually, it's because The Hunting Ground was aired on CNN before it hit the theaters - there's a certain set of rules for releasing a film that you have to respect if you want it to be eligible for both the Emmys & the Oscars. Looks like the team behind the documentary knew what they were doing! Their voting system is ****ed up - a lot of rules! This is from 2015: "For the first time in Emmys history, the academy has decided this year that the supporting nominees from limited series must choose specific episodes to submit to judges. (Nominated performers from TV movies will continue to submit the entire project.) This is true only for the supporting nominees and not for the lead contenders."
