I don't think the whole point is an excuse for Mateen, but rather trying to understand what is going on inside his head. Sure he pledged as a terrorist but what's interesting is the difference in his character from before to now. I think ISIS brainwashing is a possibility to the point of him being mentally unstable. Its important to understand the why in these situations so we could understand how ISIS contacts these people and possibly prevent similar attacks in the future.

Brainwashed? Poor him may he rest in peace uwu since it wasn't his real him who did all this

Brainwashing is just a theory even if it does sound like a plot for B rated movie. The thing is that ISIS was able to contact people like Mateen and make them do their bidding.

His ex-wife described him as bipolar :chica: Mental illness is a very real thing, you know. Not an excuse, it's being strong enough to face a reality and asking hard questions.

He wasn't brainwashed tho, he worked alone and I doubt he was ever in personal contact with ISIS.

honestly, me too.

after the descriptions of his family (father, wift, etc.) I feel like he maybe was a closeted gay/bisexual but he didn't want to come in terms with it. As far as I found out about gay people staying in the closet and marry a woman, do straight things, etc., they tent to show extremes in there personalities, emotions and such. That's why I believe that that is the case here as well, trying to kill people who were capable of understanding there own sexuality and "getting rid of the danger to be capable to explore "gay lifestyle" (sexxx, romantic feelings towards another man, etc.) and with killing gays around him, there not being anyway to get in contact with homosexuals."

But the whole thing, in what it really is, is just so sad. :(

@Juvi

To tie into what you're saying, there's been fascinating research about homophobia, showing that individuals with the most active kind (severe dislike of homosexuals) actually responded strongly (on an unconscious level) to homosexually charged visual content in a positive way.

The only explanation for that is indeed repression, the energy of which is paradoxically released as homophobia. Like you said it's very common for people with mental instability to swing from one polar opposite to the other.

It's quite an interesting and urgent issue. Living in a society where homosexuality is tolerated does not mean people aren't struggling with their sexuality, because they're still given cues from childhood onwards that exlusive heterosexuality is the norm in the end, such as the (unscientific) cultural myth that heterosexuality is the natural mode of sexual functioning, automatically pushing anything other than heterosexuality into the margins. Add to that cultural myths surrounding masculinity and it's no wonder some people will still link homosexuality to a very undesirable set of concepts, socially transmitted.

There's a lot to say about the abolishment of exclusive sexual categories, which in the end are West European inventions that might lead to more repression than sexual freedom, as history seems to show us more and more.

A closeted gay who's jealous of other gays because they can be themselves while he can't, this explains why his wife said that he used to hit her and abuse her for no reason.

Wow, I wonder what changed him. Or if he always had that hate deep inside his heart.

Well, that's pretty much the attitude change of someone who has been radicalized. It's a huge shift in behavior.

What strikes me as odd and the explanation for his sudden snap is the fact that they keep mentioning his trip to Miami and seeing to men kiss. You can see two men kiss in Disney at any given day of the week. Orlando is full of gays during Disney gay days. Orlando isn't a small city. I remember living their for a couple of months and noticing that there was a lot of gay people everywhere.

I think radicalization played a big part in his change of behavior. It's easy to fall victim of radicalization of any kind when you feel you're not going anywhere or doing anything important with your life. This group is offering you a way to deal with your sadness by replacing it with anger. The sadness in the constant state of depression you are in is replaced with anger and anger can be focused sadness can't. This "group" in this case ISIS offers him the ability to be a part of something that is bigger than his sadness. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda...instant radicalized terrorist. It's scary that its that easy.

This is my opinion. Feel free to build on it or disagree with it, just no name calling. There has been so much misdirected anger on this site already. ❤️☮

Well you said "He wasn't brainwashed tho, he worked alone and I doubt he was ever in personal contact with ISIS."

Well..... you don't have to be in personal contact or work with anyone. You can easily radicalize online or even be inspired by past attacks.

I agree, you don't have to be personally in contact with anyone to be radicalized. Websites, comments on websites, threads that are generalized but inclusive and can make someone who feels like they are an outsider on a day to day basis feel like are apart of something important. Those websites are not just written by random people. They are written by people who have studied and know how to manipulate people's fears, insecurities, and other emotions and tie them to a movement. Most of these newer attacks are by radicalized individuals who don't have direct contact with anyone until days before or even the day of the attack.  That's what makes them harder to discover. ISIS claims them but the fact is they weren't planned and are more based on hate than cunning and planning. I think it makes them that much more scary because how can the US stop an attack that isn't planned or even talked about. They have to go after these sites on the Internet or the ways the individuals become radicalized now. There really isn't a way to stop an attack that isn't planned.
