Gun sales soar in the US in 2016

According to FBI data, 2016 is on pace to set the record for the most firearm background checks in a year.

The FBI conducts a check for every gun purchase made through a federally licensed dealer, so background checks are considered a close proxy for gun sales. Not all guns are sold by federally licensed dealers, and a single background check can represent the purchase of multiple guns.

About 23.1 million checks were conducted in 2015 -- the highest ever recorded since the current system for background checks was started in 1998. This year, 11.7 million checks have been conducted through May 31, compared to 8.9 million over the same period last year.

The purpose of the checks is to screen potential buyers for felony convictions, mental illness, history of domestic violence and drug abuse.

In recent years, news of mass shootings have often led to a spike in gun sales, as fears about personal safety grow and some gun buyers worry that regulatory crackdowns would make it harder to purchase weapons.

Same, there is a part of me that is scared and thinks buying a gun and getting properly trained might be important for my safety and others' safety. But at the same time I'm totally against guns and they scare me.

This is why guns will never be banned and gun laws will be so hard to put into place. Every time these mass shootings happen, the arms industry booms. It's never going to change. How sad.

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

Another reason for me not to move in Murica. I'd rather be  in Oz, NZ or UK.

I'm buying one soon. Today made me realize that I need to be able to protect myself, my family. And I will use it only for good. Hopefully, I'll never use it.

Oh come on, I'm sick with that mentality. We have regulations and tests for driving, why not guns? If you have a clean background, you got nothing to worry about.

I kinda understand why fear would increase gun sales but buying more guns won't solve the problem. This is such a frustrating cycle to watch from afar (I don't live in the US).

The shooters shoot based on fear, the buyers buy based on fear. It's a downward spiral :duck:

This actually scares me, and it makes me happy that I live in Canada where laws are in place to at least help protect.

Common sense tells anyone that assault style weapons with high-capacity magazine clips should be banned.  No one is taking away a gun for protection or a rifle for hunting.  But there is no reason for assault weapons with high-capacity magazine clips to be owned by citizens of the U.S.   It is why this guy was able to take out so many people.

And Trump's answer is to have more guns, not less, and no gun-free zones.  We all need to be packin', y'all, church, school, college, shopping.  That's the answer according to Dump and Republicans.  They throw a fit when any legislation on better gun control laws is introduced.
