Sanders Lays Out His Campaign’s Final Days

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said he will be meeting with Hillary Clinton on Tuesday evening, in what appears to be a step in plotting the wind-down of his presidential campaign.

Appearing on “Meet The Press,” Sanders quite notably did not say that he would continue campaigning for the nomination after Washington, D.C., holds its primary on Tuesday. Instead, he described a process that sounded like finding a détente with Clinton and figuring out a way to pursue his agenda items at the convention in July.

“I simply want to get a sense of what kind of platform she will be supporting, whether she will be vigorous in standing up for working families and the middle class, moving aggressively on climate change, healthcare for all, making public colleges and universities tuition-free,” he said of Tuesday’s planned meeting. “And after we have that kind of discussion and after we can determine whether or not we are going to have a strong and progressive platform, I will be able to make other decisions.”

“I am doing everything that I can and will continue to do everything that I can to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president of the United States,” said Sanders. “I think this man in a dozen different ways is not fit to become president. I think the idea that he is running on a campaign based on bigotry, insulting Mexicans, Muslims, and women, it’s hard to believe that that is really happening in the year 2016.”

If he thinks he has any influence on her then he's being delusional. She's adopted more direct approaches thanks to his positions, but she hasn't budged on anything nor will she because she operates on reason and not idealism.

Frankly I find it astonishing that people are expecting Hillary to just roll over when she won.

Well, if she wants to unite the party then she should keep him around. A lot of people love Bernie.

I don't think he's blackmailing her. He should have conditions, why endorse someone for the sake of it? She's not owed his endorsement, just like he's not owed anything from her in policy.

Asking for some conditions is totally normal and acceptable. 

But implying she owes him anything either is preposterous, something Sanders himself has literally outlined by stating he has 1900 delegates as if that means something when he lost. The delegates are there for candidate votes not policy votes. They serve no other purpose, especially since he will lose on the first ballot.

In any case she doesn't need his endorsement. If his duty is towards the country then he'll fight Trump as he says and that will help Hillary indirectly. 

Most of his followers aren't stupid either, and will do the right thing come Fall which is to vote for Hillary or Stein in true blue or red states or whatever....anything against Trump.

Either way, I'd still prefer it if they came to some sort of agreement since that would be the best outcome. Perhaps a position in the Senate.

I don't think anyone owes anyone anything, tho if party unity is the goa, Sanders supporters should be given something. 

And I agree that a position in the senate would be great, like senate majority leader.

Of course...compromise is key and Hillary has already done that by appealing to his constituency and outlining plans to tackle her policies with far more vim and vigor than the past.

I think many of Sanders supporters need to go and revise Hillary's policies and stances. They'd probably be shocked to learn how similar she and Bernie are to begin with at this point.

What do people expect really at this point? Empty promises? She's done all she can, but even she has constantly said that the right steps need to be taken and the results won't always be the best possible but those can be built upon and improved.

If she doesn't adapt, neither will she. Right now, it doesn't seem like she's trying particularly hard to welcome in Bernie Sanders supporters. If she thinks they're going to suddenly un-feel the Bern, she's likewise delusional.
