Didymus 34,380
Hillary Clinton’s New York primary victory speech in April focused on topics including income inequality, job creation and helping people secure their retirement. It was a clear attempt to position herself as an everywoman. But an everywoman she is not — she gave the speech in a $12,495 Giorgio Armani tweed jacket. The polished outfit was a stark contrast to the fashion choices Clinton has made in the past. [...] now, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, whose dowdy and matronly style has haunted her throughout her entire political career, is making her first real effort to play the fashion card. She’s upgraded the designers she wears, opting for high-end European labels, and hired a team of image experts that includes former Michelle Obama aide Kristina Schake, who’s been tasked with shaping her style and making her more relatable. [...] Clinton, who loves to say that she left the White House in 2001 “dead broke,” is now dressing the part of someone who can command $325,000 for a single speech. Factoring in the designer labels she’s wearing, plus the number of new outfits she’s been photographed in over the past year, she’s likely spent at least $200,000 on new clothes to wear on the campaign trail. And there’s a good chance that cash is coming out of her own pocket. For example, no designers are actively promoting that she’s wearing their labels — something that probably wouldn’t happen if she were getting her threads for free. Whether she’s given discounts is harder to say, although she has been spotted at stores like Bergdorf Goodman — so she is buying some items off the rack, a stark contrast to Michelle Obama, whose staff calls designers directly. - New York Post Surprised this wasn't posted, it's discussed by all the news outlets rn where it's one of the top stories, it became one of the most trending stories on Facebook, and the amount of comments on these articles is remarkable. Also a hot topic on Reddit yesterday. Personally I agree with this user, but I'm still fascinated by the amount of attention this is getting. * Should Clinton (or any other rich politician) spend her money in other ways to prove she cares about inequality etc.? * Is this just a vicious cycle? First everyone bashed her clothing for being in poor taste, now that it's in good taste she gets bashed too for caring? * Should other candidates be thrown under the bus for this type of stuff too (is this perhaps only even a thing because Hillary is a female?) or should the issue just not be discussed at all? * Are (top) politicians earning too much money? * Is it better to spend a lot on a quality product than little on an outfit from H&M produced by what's pretty much slave labour? etc.
LePetitGAGABLover 21,234
She can spend HER money however the **** she wants. Americans are too critical about people. I have seen people buy things on food stamps and yet have an iPhone 6 plus and designer handbags. And yet no one says ****. But a rich person buys something expensive and the whole country is in uproar. So............. . . .. . . . Having said that. Her outfit is terrible
SlaeUrAnus 16,111
That outfit costs nearly $12,500? Not slating the woman's fashion choices, but oh my.. In my messy era.

Chelseaaaaaa 1,453
No one complains about the expensive suiits Obama wore on the campaign trail and still does now. Same for Trump. I find it in bad taste on her behalf but overall irrelevant.

I'm sure we can all find the same dynamics in most people's lives, no matter how rich or poor they are. I know from my own spending that I could do a lot more socially etc. with it, but I don't, so I don't feel the need to call someone out for not donating 99% of her income to charity for sure lol. We can all do with a lot less. Now I won't deny 12k for a ****ing jacket is very excessive, but on the other hand, linked to the argument above, she's already doing so much politically and having such a major influence on social issues etc. that she's still doing more than all of us combined overall So yeah, it's just a stupid argument. If she was spending the state budgets in this way, then we can talk.
En_Sabah_Nur 9,366
Since we're now criticizing the amount these candidates spend on their clothing, let's see how much CHUMP spends on his suits?!? Since he is a BILLIONAIRE after all... Egypt. W
LanasNerfGun 4,679
Don't forget many designer houses often gift their items to public figures in exchange for free advertising for their brand. Jeez guys, c'mon don't start with this misogynistic crap here YAWN why are there no threads on Trump's suits?
