Despite Clinton beating him with votes in '08, Obama won in many swing states (which are crucial in the general) and won more of the contests (more delegates). So the system isn't designed to always produce a nominee that has the popular vote on their side. So not very democratic actually. But it is what it is. A true democracy is ruthless, not something many Americans aspire to have The electoral college system gives smaller states the ability to have an fair impact on the election. The number of delegates isn't necessarily proportional. It's determined by the number of representatives PLUS senators. So even small states like DC have at least 3 electoral votes. Also it protects minorities because these minorities tend to live in the large cities of the bigger states, their votes are important in tilting all the electoral votes of their state, thus encouraging candidates of both parties to appeal for their votes. So yes @PartySick the nominee is not necessarily the winner of the popular vote, but that's not the point. It's about states, not the national level. Obama and Clinton were evenly matched really. It would be erroneous to say Clinton destroyed him in the popular vote. She beat him, that's important to note, but the divide wasn't significant enough. The fact that Obama performed well in swing states, and the fact he had more delegates, was enough to make superdelegates switch to him. There is no such thing in the current election.
